Back in the early 1960s, Mopar had some of the most unique looking cars, and this '62 Imperial LeBaron is no exception. That well used 413 engine sounded healthy, and those floating headlights as well as the suspended taillights give that Imperial so much character!.

I wouldn't have minded making a trip to Carlisle to see a bunch of antique cars like that '62 Imperial. That LeBaron is what you call the cream of the crop of all Chrysler Corporation cars! You hardly saw LeBarons, and Imperials as a whole, even when they were new. For every one Imperial that Chrysler made, Lincoln built three or four Continentals, and Cadillac made at least 10 of their cars. Seeing a late 1950s to early 1960s Exner-era Imperial is like watching a rolling work of art. You don't see very many today. And I can just picture riding in a '62 Imperial - it must be like floating on a cloud! These cars got lots of exposure in Hollywood films and television sitcoms ("The Beverly Hillbillies" comes to mind, as does "Move Over Darling," with Doris Day). Thanks once again, Lou! You know I'll be on the lookout! And I hope your Thanksgiving day was great! And I'm wishing a Happy Heavenly birthday to my mom - she would have turned 85! _(11/28/2022)_ P.S. I noticed you did a video on a black '61 Imperial LeBaron. I'm going to take some time to check that one out!

Automotive journalist Tom McCahill jokingly called the 1956 Imperial taillights "sparrow strainers" back in 1956 in Mechanix Illustrated. I think that comment may be what Lou was referring to. McCahill also loved the Imperial LeBaron and owned and drove a new one every year. Thanks, Lou, for showing us this one. Kinda reminds me of Milburn Drysdale's car on The Beverly Hillbillies and that music they played when it drove up.

They loved this LeBaron and said that, only as with the Rolls-Royce, people looked at this car expecting to see a celebrity. Hi, Lou! The 1962 Imperial was a refinement of the '61 models, still with the free-standing headlamps but with a split grille and without those bombastic fins. That ribbon speedometer must be pretty fun to watch, although if you want to see one that changes color as you pick up speed, you want to ride in a 1959-1962 Oldsmobile 88 or 98. Woodie and Sandy are very fortunate to have found a survivor like this right up their alley, and yeah, you could live in it. In fact, people tell me the exact same thing about my wagon! I do find it a bit curious, though, why Chrysler gave it a relatively narrow hood while they packed that big 413 underneath. Oh, well! Anyway, it would be nice to be able to get to a Carlisle show someday. Meanwhile, thanks to the three of you for this nice quiet ride in the big dog!

What a treat to see this huge boat that was styled like a mid century modern American sculpture, big brother Lou. Whimsical and bizarre at times and always to make a statement, show wealth, and not look like anything else. Ya don't see these Imperials anymore, so just amazing. The wildly styled interior makes just as big an impression. I especially enjoyed your ride with Mom and Dad in the huge front seat as you listened to their tales and let them shine. The taillights were called sparrow strainers - a little more graphic. Used more in conjunction with the 57-59 models, but fitting enough here. The 'grab handle' on back of the front seat was a robe rail - but you've got the function. Too bad he wasn't showing the original interior; the LeBaron was quite understated - the standard cloth was very formal, and the LeBaron was a limited production top of line model, priced with the 60 Special vs. a deVille.

@@loucostabile I really would like to have another Imperial. The build quality was the best I've ever seen from a 60's car. The Imperial was ahead of it's time. I also loved that I could lower it with the front torsion bars and the rear went up and down with compressed air. I was 23 years old when I had mine, so naturally mine was slightly lower than average, but not obnoxiously slammed. Right now I have a 1963 1/3 Ford Galaxie XL500 white 2 door 390 engine.

Lou Woody and Sandy are a very blessed couple to own a piece of Americana that you can’t get no better than that even though it doesn’t have air conditioning, but whoever bought that Ride should’ve added air conditioning to the car. I've never seen an Imperial rust out due to the "Free Standing" headlamps? That seems like it's just sort of made up or invented....I've never heard of the lights being described as "floating" The free standing concept is a neo classic inspired design to emulate the vehicles pre 1940's. Exner used this trick also on the Stutz Blackhawk. The Taillights are known as "Bomb Sites". the "Bird Strainers" is more a derogatory name invented recently, clearly the owner of the car had never heard of that term before......New terminology developed on the web from hack journalists on curbside classics seem to creep their way into nomenclature, it's not historically accurate as a term.

Fun fact: imperials were banned from demolition derbies because they were built too good! Mopar or nocar

Another wonderful video like always ! In my opinion and I am sure others would agree . You are the king of classic car presentations. P.s. don't let that get to your head .LOL

If Chrysler had toned down the styling of Imperial would they have sold better ? But without the Exner flamboyance it just wouldn't be an Imperial. GM sold more Cadillac convertibles each year than did Chrysler's entire Imperial line.
