My mother has instilled that fear of being robbed even without wearing luxury. So since little I've had a few rules. Obviously, nothing in the pockets, specially if it peaks out or gets close to the opening For bags 1-Only wear bags that close, so no tote bags. It's easy to see what's inside and people can slip their hands in to take anything 2-Zippers are amazing but don't let the tail at the end on the outside. They can be cut and thieves will have access to the inside of the bag 3-Don't wear the bag behing you, you don't know what's going on there. Actually, don't let your bag out of sight 4-Crossbody is the safest against having your bag snatched away Don't be too conscious about expensive stuff. If you show you are anxious for one (or more) of your items, thieves will pay more attention to it. For example, I have some black diamond jewelry I love and wear often. I act like it's not even there and no one pays attention to it either. I did a test more than once (with some fake jewelry), checking it from time to time and almost everyone noticed it. I could talk about my mother's rules about how expensive the things we wear should be, but now I'm also into some luxury items 😄

Great idea for a video Sophie! I've worked in criminal justice in Australia for 10 years. A few things I've learned: 1. Regardless of who you are they never remember you, and they don't recognise celebrities. 2. If men want to put stuff in their pockets put it in the front pockets (because you will know if someone touches you there) 3. wallets been stolen from bags on chairs next to people. 4. don't keep your house key/car key etc in the same place as your driver's licence. 5. Desperate people will steal anything including your shoes. 6. check your vehicle glove box/log book for a valet key. don't leave it in your car. When i go out to the city i wear my cross body under my jacket so people cant slash/grab it.

I'm certainly aware of this, but one important thing I dont think I heard you mention is the importance of good insurance on your luxury goods! I wear my engagement ring almost daily, it's a beautiful 2ct solitaire on 4 prongs. Having said that, I NEVER take it with me when I travel abroad nor do I take any expensive jewellery with me. I only pack costume jewellery when travelling abroad. I usually take the inexpensive replicas with me which obviously I wouldn't miss if they go missing. As for designer bags, I wear them out all the time but again when I'm abroad I only take those which have no visible branding and am always very aware of my surroundings.

This is something I've always appreciated about you: you enjoy your luxury items but recognize that purchases and lifestyles like this can come with a price beyond your sales receipt. You do need to be careful, you do need to be mindful of your surroundings, and you do need to be smart about how to keep yourself and your hard-earned items as safe as you can manage. Unfortunately, you've had incidents where you were targeted or naïve and lost precious items, but you clearly learned from those experiences and regularly talk about it so that your viewers can be smarter sooner about how to look out for themselves better. I would only add to see if you can get your items insured, make sure you don't leave your goods in plain sight when you're leaving the house, and to change the locks on your home ASAP if you ever experience an incident where just your keys were lost or stolen. He was surely followed home so they could rob him the next time he left his home. I hope that friend of yours didn't have anything further taken from him and remains safe. Thanks for your practical advice, Sophie, and have a great day!

I hardly ever get paranoid about pickpocketing in my city and my mom taught me to always supervise your bag and never put it on the back of a chair or on the floor because she once got robbed when she was younger as somebody was a spotter and stole it when they were walking out. She actually told me she had a LV pouchette and some girl got out of her car as she was driving by and tried to yank it from her but my mom yanked back and the girl gave up and got back in the car with the driver and drove off.

I experienced luxury theft a few months ago, unfortunately. My friends and I went to Napa for a gal’s trip, and on the way to Napa from the San Fran airport, we decided to stop in downtown SF for lunch. We parallel parked our rental car on what looked like a busy street in broad, sunny daylight. Naively, we left our luggage in the car and went to lunch. When we walked back, someone had busted the rear driver’s side window and taken my friend’s backpack and MY carry-on, which had over $10k of designer bags and shoes. The police came and I filed a report. THANKFULLY, I have renter’s insurance for my apartment, which covered about 80% of my loss. 😅 Tldr; Make sure you insure your luxury items, and NEVER leave them in a vehicle!

Luckily Switzerland is a very safe country overall. I am not worried when wearing any of my things in my city thankfully. Zürich is so posh, nobody really bats an eye at a Chanel bag or a Rolex. I am very particular about the stuff I take on holidays though. My watches all go into the bank safe, because it took me quite a while to build my collection of hard to find vintage treasures. I would be devastated if I lost them. Not even entirely because of the monetary value, but because of the time and effort it took to find them. Depending on where we travel I will maybe take an old Omega with me or really just my Casio. I also have all my luxury stuff insured with replacement coverage. So the insurance will actually cover the price of a replacement, not just what you paid for it. I have a particular set of "travel approved" handbags which I will take with me. Unassuming and non brand. I want to enjoy my holidays and not stress about safety or having to replace my cards and passport while abroad. For clubbing I will take a fanny pack that I wear crossbody.

Hi Sophie, thanks for your video. You posed very good question: what is the meaning of buying something if you don't use and enjoy it. I agree. My approach on this is following: I buy luxury goods with the mindset that if I loose them it will not ruin me. This means that luxery item does not cost overly above on my income. For example, I don't invest money in something that requires saving money for many years. I choose something that I can afford if i would save for several months. In this way it will not be too tragic if I loose it. I make my money's worth while I use it and enjoy the experience of using it.

Great video TVM Sophie, if yr bag has feet & zipped up a good idea is to either hook it through a chair leg or if you have a bag hangar ensure it’s between yourself & the table or friend. Crossbody with opening facing inwards is a great idea too. I can’t get my HB to have a man bag either but he is situationally aware due to his profession. Every type of thief is opportunistic. I was gobsmacked to find additional security cameras installed in the frozen food section of our local supermarket recently. I can’t imagine stuffing frozen food under yr jumper, baby pram or handbag but people do. I’ve seen security footage of a woman in a long skirt put a full carton of beer (24 x 375 ml cans) under that skirt & waddle out the store, yes she was caught shortly thereafter. I definitely think the key is to be aware of the environment you are in and those around you eg there are places I would never wear my designer bags but I’d carry my £25 M&S little rucksack instead. A tip when out and about is also to wear your coat over your bag if it’s a cross body, that way it either covers it or it at least makes it harder to pull off

I was afraid of wearing my pearl engagement ring for a long time (afraid of damage, not theft). But, when I went to have it sized the jeweler said if it were to get stolen then I never would have enjoyed before it was gone. Now I wear it quite often. In general I think you have to do your best to be aware of your surroundings. Some places or times it’s better not to wear certain items, some items should be locked away when not in use, and maybe some things should be stored where nobody would think to look. We can just do our best to be smart, enjoy our special items for as long as we can, and just hope that we’re not unlucky (I’ve been robbed twice, more sentimental things rather than really valuable).

We had our car window broken twice in the same area, right next to a luxury hotel. After that I've become very careful in the area. Yesterday we went out and I was feeling weird and hid my bag under the table when no one could reach. It wasn't even big designer but I felt too many stares from people. Don't assume a place is safe because people are wearing expensive things there. If anything it's the opposite. Just be aware.

It never occurred to me to purchase bags in store. I look at items in store then purchase online. Very safe and I like the way that some luxury shops post the store bag out to you as well nicely laid on top of the item. Gucci and Fendi/Fendace do this for instance. So lovely. Plus you get 30 days return online, whereas you get only 14 days in store. They even send a courier to pick up too, free of charge. I’m just too paranoid swinging a store bag because I know thieves take turns watching people go in and out and play tag with someone else in another street via text. If purchasing in store I recommend ordering a taxi, have a coffee inside while you wait for it then go straight out of the door into the taxi. The taxi can drop you to your car or your destination. Just to add, the store can also send to your home but you still only get the 14 day return because you made the purchase in the store. Well done Sophie for highlighting this very important topic. So lovingly concerned about the safety of your viewers and your poor friend. So sad for him. 🫂🤗💕💕💕

This was very helpful since we’ll be in London at the end of the year. My husband and I just had the discussion about whether or not he should wear his expensive watch. I guess from what you said maybe not but if he does we’ll make sure to get it insured. We got him a Fendi bag for him to carry crossbody in the front when we were in Vegas last weekend.

Sophie, I just watched this video and realize you may not read my comment but I used to work for a personal security company a few years back selling security systems to mainly private homes. The stories i could tell you! 😱 However, I suggest your friend gets installed a system with "panic buttons" INCL. 2 way communication. When activated the control room of the security company can listen in and hear what is going on. If the owner is not there they can call the police (and send their own people) and tell the robbers to get get out as the police are on their way. That way you can limit the time the intruders are in your home. If the owner is there they will record the incident and call the police without the robbers knowledge. That was a lot of explanation but your friend can put security in so he can feel safe in his own home.

Good for you for speaking about this so sensibly, too many luxury influencers (I'm looking at you Kristina Braly) walk around with three Love bracelets, an AP watch, a few Alhambras, a giant (fake?) diamond and what appears to be a different Hermes bag every day. It's like they want to get robbed. Mind blowing.

Great vlog Sophie. My first thought was don’t own or wear anything flashy or of great value, however it really doesn’t seem to make much difference. We had burglars break into our house during broad daylight during a Saturday a few years ago. I really don’t know what they expected to get from me, maybe my 10-year-old skoda on the driveway? Or maybe they desired my One and only flashy designer item, a Versace Brolley bought from TK Maxx. All they got in the end was my mum‘s handbag, found at the bottom of the garden with the wallet stolen and a couple of quid missing. I don’t remember her losing much at all we could think of was what would’ve happened if we bumped into these people? Some of the most violent crimes I’ve heard of seem to be addicts mugging for a couple of quid X

In 2004 when I was 6 my parents purple BMW M3 (which was their dream car) was stolen from our carport in the middle of the night. No one heard it happen, even though the carport was under my parents window so they must have somehow broken in without the keys and then pushed it down the street. We later found out that there had been a string of luxury cars stolen that night in the area. But the scariest part was when the police told my mum that the thief’s would have been following her for a few days before hand so that they could figure out her routine. Which meant that they would have been following her to school drop offs and pick ups and would have known where my brother and I went to school.

I saw a lime green Dior bag that had rip marks that were so obvious and I challenged the seller and he refused to answer. Clearly the bag had been stolen. It was on an auction site, then the same bag turned up on a reseller site. I was stunned at the effrontery of the guy. I could tell from how the rip marks were....in the part where the handle meets the bag, the weakest point it had been ripped from the owner and they'd put up a fight! Moreover who wants a stolen bag? Out here, currently living in the Netherlands, people are targeted wearing Rolex watches. They get robbed in broad daylight usually while being treathened with a knife or even at gun point. It has gone so out of hand in Amsterdam that even someone wearing a fake one was robbed at gun point. Bags are still safe to wear mostly because not too many people recognize them if they are not LV monogram. I don't ever take a wallet with me, just a card and cash in my pockets. I like my American coats cause many ladies coats have an inside pocket, which is virtually non existent in Europe.

You are absolutely right about never putting things in pockets. Many years ago I had my wallet stolen out of my coat pocket in a busy shop. The experience totally shook me. I´m sure the thieves were a bunch of adolescents that were lingering between the clothes stands.
