I am having a very difficult time finding the words to express the tremendous depth of Lyle's talent. He was truly a gift to this world. There is no one who can come close to his spirit. Thank you, Lyle, for leaving us such a magnificent legacy to lift our souls. Rest easy. You did good. :)

He is eternal , one day everyone of us will get into this, we are all eternal, in this space time dimension he was in constant communication with the fluid cloud of the Universe wich is ONE, he had this enormous gift of genius , something coming from the ALWAYS and EVERYWHERE, which this actual world is missing but everything will be revealed, we can only thank this music MASTER for putting us in direct conjunction with eternity... I mean, "death" is a word to say that your mind doesn't work anymore, your spirit is broken, dead, and you are not a human anymore. "Death" is the end of your organic life. I don't call "dust" life. All Lyle has to do is play a couple of bars and I'm back to reliving my life from the ages of 17 to 30 and like a flash, it's past..sooo many wonderful memories connected to his notes, ideas, sound and emotion..what a gift it is to have had his music lead me through life and to where I am now..love going back to re-listen when ever possible just to feel that feeling again..

Lyle is not usually counted among Evans, Corea, Tyner, Jarrett, and Hancock, but I think there is no doubt he is just as influential. There is clearly a Mays' style that young pianists learn to emulate. One of 20th century's greatest jazz pianists. RIP Lyle and thank you for all your beautiful moments you gave us.

I've seen Pat Metheny "live in concert" 5 times in the "post" Lyle Mays era - each time immensely rewarding, but OH - what I would give to have SEEN and HEARD Lyle and Pat on stage together. Thank goodness for these precious video memoirs of a musical giant - and now an angel. Two fuzzy haired musicians who could transport you to another world with their magic fingers ....through their brilliant heart felt creations.

Every time that I listen to this I get a little moist in the eyes. This is the essence of Lyle 100%. So incredibly emotionally intelligent, so perfect in every way. As a pianist and composer Lyle’s influence on me personally was profound. I miss him dearly and his music continues to inspire me every day. I can listen to this forever!

I remember the moment I feel in love with jazz.. I was in college at a record shop & I heard San Lorenzo for the first time.. the gentle soliloquy of Lyle was like sunlight dancing on Spring rain... I was mesmerized & feel in love with his unique style...never looked back.. thanks for all the memories..

I always have thoughts of what would be my top 20 songs of all time, this tune makes that list all the time, and of course that goes without saying PMG's, ' to the end of the world' , Miles Davis 'Flamenco Schketches ' Damn this tune 'Close To Home' stirs up so many emotions, such a beautiful, reflective , goosebumps moments, close my eyes and it transports me either back in time or forward in time, Lyle ... You are one of the Most brilliant, talented, gifted musicians that we all have had the privilege of knowing just a little bit for a short time. I love you LYLE and hope to see you in Heaven one day with my Lord God Jesus Christ. IF you spent any time with ALEX ACUNA, you are in Heaven because he loves God and the Lord Jesus Christ. I know he loved you enough to spend time playing music with you and I'm sure he shared the truth about Jesus with you. So saddened to learn of the passing of Lyle Mays! As we know, he was a stellar keyboard virtuoso and composer. His sound was always heartfelt, gentle, and his keyboard approach possessed an inherent cinematic beauty that truly transported listeners to an ineffable sonic dimension! His solo work and his collaborations with Pat Metheny ("The Falcon and The Snowman" soundtrack; "Offramp", the list is endless) are for many of us, the soundtracks to our lives. I have grandchildren in high school who study music and know Lyles music, I introduced them to his recordings and it's amazing that three generations now all enjoy what we know to be timeless masterpieces..

Saw Pat and Lyle in 1981 in Kansas City while majoring in architecture at KU in Lawrence, KS and that was it. Graduated, moved to NY and enrolled at SUNY, Old Westbury campus in Long Island to study jazz under Prof. Dr. Ken McIntyre. Pat was my hero but Lyle was the force that really made me snap and go for it. Thanks Lyle.

First heard him in 1975 when he was playing at North Texas State University (now University of North Texas) in the One O'Clock Lab Band. It was evident that a special musician had arrived. Now 45 years later, it has ended all too soon.
