Lynval Golding of The Specials tells the story behind the song “Gangsters” when their guitars were stolen by gangsters and a fight ensured in the hotel…“You couldn’t write the script of what we went through.” Golding describes the hotel confrontation and channeling the spirit of the Maroons in Jamaica (the only group that could not be controlled by British colonizers), recalling “My British-ness went...I stopped talking in English and started shouting in patois.” By the time the band arrived at the venue that evening, all the gear had been returned, presumably by the same gangsters who had taken them.
