I was only 17 years old when my mom told me there had been a plane crash and some people from Lynyrd Skynyrd had been killed. My heart sank when I learned who was killed. I never got to hear the original band perform and to this day I feel like I've missed something special. I'm convinced if Ronnie's IQ had been tested he would have been a certified genius. Though he couldn't play an instrument, his ability to formulate lyrics in his brain and recall them without writing them down combined with his ability to hear songs and arrangements and instruments in his head then make it all work perfectly is genius. Two years ago I was passing through Florida and realized I was going to be near the cemetery where the band is buried. It was only 45 minutes before the cemetery closed so I made a quick detour. After paying my respects at Ronnie, Leon and Billy's gravesites, I got into my car to go to the other graves. When the the engine started the radio was already on and the first sound out of it was the intro to Sweet Home Alabama. I literally started to chill and tears came to my eyes. It was almost like the guys were saying, "Thanks for coming by to hang out with us for a few minutes." "Fly on Freebird(s)".

This is when they picked up Steve Gains and he brought a whole new sound to the band and it really excelled skynyrd to stardom. This is when they stared their imb back from the bottom. Just a few short yeats later their plane would crash. "Give me back my bullets" would be redone with Johnny Van Zant and their new lead Ricky Meadlock. In 1986, Rick goes to town on that solo. Well, darlin' , welcome to the land of blessed ears! This song is a J.J.Cale number covered by Lynyrd Skynyrd. However, it is my opinion that the studio cut was superior in both performance and production. The album "Second Helping" was recorded in Mussel Shoals, Alabama and was possibly the first time Billy Powell (RIP) was recorded playing piano.

He's the most underrated of all the guitarists in the band. I wouldn't flat out call him the best but he's certainly every bit as good as Ed or Allen or Steve, in his own way. He was probably the most solid player in the band, and personally he's my biggest influence and the main reason I started playing guitar in the first place. Always been a huge fan of Gary!

I was always blown away by just how much talent these guys had. There has been some great southern rockabilly bands through the years, but nothing with the extensive "orchestrial" combination that Skynyrd put out song after song. These guys could've just as easily put on tuxedos and played at high-ball dinner parties in the best symphonies in New York then, and now. Amazing talent from every member!
