In 1979 I was 17. I had ran away from home and had been living on the streets for. Almost 2 years. I remember calling my Nana, my grandmother, and just telling her “I wanna come home..”. 2 days later after a bus ride from Tampa to Philly I was home. My life turned around after that. Joined the Navy, got a great career and am now almost at retirement from work. 2 young grandchildren and a life. I still remember “Nanny I wanna come home..”.

This is one of my favorites too. I remember exactly where I was when they announced on the radio that we had just lost Gary. I stopped at a hardware store in Bigfork Montana to get some supplies and I told the cashier what I heard on the radio. She had no idea who I was talking about. The other cashier who was from Alabama overheard me saying that and he started talking to me about Gary Lynyrd Skynyrd and Allen Collins. It was a cool moment on a sad day

This beautiful song takes me back to the Fall of 1978 when I was a 14 year old lad and everything around me was shitty except my maternal grandparents that were raising me because my mother was too busy getting high with her heroin addiction and I had an uncle and some aunts who accused me of being gay because I did not have a girlfriend and right across the street from us lived a bunch of glue sniffers (This was the drug of choice for the poor Hispanics of San Antonio's Westside Barrio) that made my life a living hell because I was not one of them, in addition, I missed a lot of my 7th, 8th and 9th grade years because I really did not have any friends or family members that I besides grandparents what I was going through. I found my refuge in books, music and movies. I would hang out all day at the public library downtown and read as many books as I could and get back home in enough time to deliver my newspaper route. I graduated on time and I now have three degrees including a Master's in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Iowa. I thank God and my grandparents for being there for me.

I was only 11 when the plane crashed and took Ronnie,Steve ,and Cassie. It was the same year Elvis died and I was a heartbroken little kid! I loved both with equal passion and still to this day miss both! Elvis was also my pops favorite and as a DJ for a local Tadio Station he was the one who turned me onto them and The Doors. All three had tragic ends! Those three plus Jonny Cash and my dad and I filled our house with the sounds of these Epic Artists! There will never be a singer like Ronnie Van Zant again he just commanded the stage like few could! See ya in Heaven Free Bird!!!!!!!!

My absolute favorite song by the boys. I believe it to be the most soulful song Skynyrd ever produced...and Ronnie's pain can be heard throughout. I've been 'home' a total of 8 months since 1979. I have indescribable home sickness. Ronnie sings it for 'me' from his heart. Two unwavering truths in life: once its gone it ain't comin' back, and no matter how much you wish for, or pray for another chance, if you blew it the first time, you're shit outa luck.

What a Awesome Song and what with one of the most Talented Southern Rock Bands, wow how this Group could produce such some great Songs over the years, to me they are So Missed, the Original one and only Lynyrd Skynyrd wow what so many Songs were master pieces, but this song of Comin Home, it is a wonderful and most master pieces of Song written by this Great & Awesome Band of the 1970s!! Comin Home, there is just something about it, with the Original Band of the 1970s, with Ronnie Van Zant he was Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Original founding members of their Earlier period! That day in 1977 was when the Music Died and the most Talented Musical Geniuses!!

I always find it amazing when some of an artists best creations weren't among the "hits" or even their best known... Comin' Home, Was l Right, & even Pure & Simple, etc fall into this category where LS is concerned. When from the heart & life experiences songwriting of RVZ, to the wonderful melodies of musicianship of the band members, go into creating gems like Comin' Home & others, you know they had something special. And with the caffeine-like shot of Steve Gaines on board, we can only wonder how much brighter the star of Skynyrd would've shone. 🎵💥🙏
