I don't understand kids today...Back in 1977, you probably got into this concert for less than ten bucks, but you wouldn't have DARED take your eyes off the band for a minute for a phone!! When I attend concerts now, and we've all paid a minimum of $50 to see a band, and half the kids are checking their text messages....I just don't get it!

This was from a time when music actually meant something. I like seeing younger people's reactions to music that was made long before they were born or even before their parents were born. I've read so many negative comments on other channels against "Boomers". One thing that is so very true about us Boomers, we had the best music of all time.

@B L, Very well said, and I couldn't agree with you more. I mean beyond the Beatles, we had CCR, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Hendrix, Joplin, Heart, the Doobies--I could be here all night! The music takes each of us back to our memories, good and bad. It was palpable! What a time to be young. I am also so glad to see a young person, who is obviously so intelligent, loving "our Boomer music." The way she explains how she feels about how it affects her is so refreshing. I said this about her before; she is an "old soul." ✌✌

During the summer I'd leave the house and meet up with my friends at 9am and my parents wouldn't see me again till the street lights came on and I rolled through the front door hungry, ragged, tore up, bruised, sometimes bloody and covered in dirt from tromping through the woods, swimming, fishing, wrestling, climbing trees, riding my bike for miles, engaging in epic battles with sticks and snow balls and forts and...well you get the idea 😂 We didn't get our first color t.v. till I was 7? 8 years old maybe? When this song was originally written, the music to the song was written by a then 17 years old Allen Collins (the tall guitarist in white that plays the ripping lead at the end) and the lyrics to the song written at the ripe old age of 20 by lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. The song intially came out a few years after it was written on their debut album Pronounced Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1973 and would later be part of their brilliant live album recorded in Atlanta in 1976 called One More From The Road. To this day, Freebird remains one of the most iconic songs in rock history along with Zepplin's Stairway To Heaven and a few others. Not bad for a couple of high school dropouts which is what Collins, Van Zant, and most of the band all were.

I watched a movie about the stompers, anyway while they were recording in Alabama supposedly the piano player at the time was a roadie for them, but supposedly the band went to lunch, when they returned to the studio they heard what was the beginning of this song being played on the piano, turned out he was like concert pianist, and eventually they made him a official band member.

Sadly this was the last time Lynyrd Skynyrd was filmed live and this was 3 months and 18 days before the plane crash just a few shows into the Street Survivors tour. This video is awesome but also sad as everyone on stage, with the exception of 2 people (the drummer and Gary Rossington one of the lead guitarists) are all now deceased. Some died in the plane crash, some survived with major injuries. Allen Collins had his car crash and died in 1990, the piano player and the bass player died later as they played in the reformed Lynyrd Skynyrd until their deaths.

I WAS THERE IN 1977 . THE SHOW WAS CALLED A DAY ON THE GREEN . IT WAS PLAYED AT THE OAKLAND COLISEUM IN OAKLAND CALIFORNIA . THEY ESTIMATED THE CROWD AT 50,000 . 2 MONTHS LATER THEY CRASHED IN THEIR PLANE , THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN GROUNDED . CAUSE THEY BARELY MADE IT DOWN THE FLIGHT BEFORE .

so I was just getting ready to be a junior in high school just bought Lynyrd Skynyrd Street survivors album, waited at the store for it... remember dreaming about Lynyrd Skynyrd dying and then I woke up and realized it was real it was on my radio while I slept... One of the most heartbreaking days of my life and it was the only album I ever bought that had a sleeve in it with their tour dates... But they never came about😔

The Convention Hall performance one week later 7/13/77 Ronnie let Allen play the solo even while longer I think that one’s even better though it’s a smaller, indoor venue

Not even close. Visually Knebworth is a better video but for shear musical brilliance nothing beats or comes close to this performance ever. Thats not even an opinion, its just a fact. . . . .period

To pink metal head: you’re probably aware of the confederate flag- to most southerners, it was NOT and not intended to be racist, but rather a symbol of patriotism towards the Confederate forces it’s part of our wonderful / sometimes awful heritage as Americans- but you know this already, I see from your reaction to the songthat you are well beyond your status to see the beauty of the ...keep that open mind- we respect you here😅😩🎃🤝

I just watched you do this reaction, and really enjoyed it. Free Bird is a great song. But the absolute Best Live performance ever is Janis Joplin at the Monterey Pop Festival, doing Ball and Chain. That one gives me chills to this day. Check it out. You'll love it.

First time seeing one of your reaction videos, Southern ROCK is my favorite genre Skynyrd and Tom Pretty are my favorites. First thing you're absolutely gorgeous, second your spot on, Skynyrd didn't need lights and pyrotechnics it was straight forward guitar driven rock. Allen Collins, Gary Rossington & Steven Gaines are the players in that video.

Pink, you need to see the performance of Free Bird when they opened for The Rolling Stones. Story is Mick Jagger told them not walk out on “the tongue” on the stage, which was shaped like The Rolling Stones emblem. Ronnie did it anyway.

100 % agree! This is sooo good but the Knebworth performance is even better and the solo goes longer.Allen really put that huge stage to good use and you get to see him do it..The camera work in this performance is in the crowd too much

That final solo is called a "Triple-Guitar Attack" and was performed by Allen Collins (1st lead), Steve Gains (2nd Lead) and Gary Rossington (Slide and rhythm guitar). It's the only performance of its kind in the world.

Yes! This was at a time when musical and vocal skill and talent ruled the stage over looks, lights, smoke and glitz. Just music and positive energy. I miss this band. Once again, I love your reaction. This song is iconic!

The 70's were a great time to be a teenager. Rock and Roll was at it's peak! Living so close to NYC, there were multiple FM Rock Stations; 102.7 WNEW, 95.5 WPLJ, ect... Music was as necessary as Girls and Alcohol. If the radio wasn't on, there was an Album, 8 Track, or Cassette in the stereo. I Attended over 100 Concerts between 1976 and 1983. Some of the acts I saw (not a complete list) The Allman Brothers, Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, AC/DC, 38 Special, Heart, The Outlaws, Marshall Tucker Band, ZZ Top, Doobie Brothers, Van Halen, Charlie Daniels Band, Grateful Dead, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Molly Hatchet (many of these were multiple times). Some of the places where these concerts took place: In NJ, Capitol Theatre; Garden State Arts Center; Six Flags Great Adventure; Convention Hall, Asbury Park; Mothers, Wayne; Meadowlands Arena; Fairleigh Dickinson University; Montclair State College... In NY, Madison Square Garden & the Nassau Coliseum... Awesome memories!

2:55 "Wow, they're killing it!" Heh. Just wait... When that plane went down in '77, it was a loss akin to losing Jimi and Janis. These guys were still in their prime both creating music and performing it. They had many productive years ahead of them. We can only wonder how many more classics they would have produced.

The thing to keep in mind here is there is no lip syncing, no auto tuning, not crazy studio magicary. This is just pure talent. And it's not just Lynyrd Skyryrd. It's Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Commodores..... So much talent. Sorry todays' manufactured music SUUCCCKKKKSSSSS! It doesn't let the cream rise to the top.

At that time, Skynyrd had three guitarists : original guitarists Allen Collins and Gary Rossington, and Steve Gaines, who had recently replaced Ed King. They also had Leon Wilkeson on bass guitar. Allen Collins is the one you noticed jamming on the solo. Sadly, Steve Gaines and his sister Cassie died in the plane crash, along with Ronnie Van Zant.
