Hey Jamal, little story on the origins of this band. These guys were in high school and had their little band going, they helped to finance it by collecting pop bottles, back in the day like when I was a kid and you could turn them in and get a nickel or a dime out of the bottle depending on the size of it. They had a gym teacher that criticized them and told them they would never amount to anything, so in his honor, they named the band after that teacher, Leonard Skinner. Since you love a song that has a story, I highly recommend Give Me Three Steps.

There's a story out of Muscle Shoals, after the core studio musicians that started out with Fame Studios left to start their own recording studio that they signed Lynyrd Skynyrd. When they came back from lunch after breaking in the midst of recording Free Bird, they found one of the workers for the studio on the piano playing what fit right into the song. Turns out the man was a classically trained concert pianist and nobody at the studio knew it. The band hired him and when you see the live concert footage, what you hear as an organ in the studio version your playing is done on the piano. It really does add to the composition of the song and fits perfectly. I've never heard this studio version, but I would venture to say, like the Allman Brothers Band the live version is most likely longer with some jamming involved.

That's not why it's a joke, it's a joke because it's a song everyone identifies with as good guitar playing. @Christopher Moles, exactly. The song is one of the first ones I learned to play once i got to be fairly competent on a guitar. It's beautiful, but not terribly complicated. One of the best ever written imo tho. The very first I ever learned was "All I can do is write it in a song"..

Cool kid story for 400.00 Alex. I got to be the guest of the band for the weekend Fall1974 in St.Louis. A family member knew Ronnie Van Zant. I was 11 and fully aware of who they were, and how cool it was to be backstage with the VIP sticker badge. The drummer asked me out to the stage for a song. All the guys were cool, sweet big brothers to me. One of my treasured memories! Heart broken with news of the plane crash a few years later. Ironically, I worked in production in high school when Gary Rossington was touring, and got to relay that memory to him.

A warm North Texas night and this song comes on KZEW or Q102 as we cruised around your little one horse town. You head your loud as hell Camaro toward the south end of town as the lead into the song starts. You ease through the three red lights with the volume at a moderate level as you head out of town. If you time it right, you turn left on the farm to market road that leaves town and reach into the cooler in the back seat for an ice-cold Coors and place it in the coozie at 9:00. You try to ease out of the city limits around 9:20 as you crank the radio to 11 and see if you can put your foot through that 4 barrel carb on that Camaro. Just before you roll into the next little farm town around 13:31 you back off the throttle around 120 and take a long, cool sip off that Coors. You then become a model citizen, more or less, for the rest of the evening. This happened every weekend for the entire time this tune was on the charts and for years afterward. At 64, it's still one hell of a temptation when I hear it today.

Even though I have seen this band in concert, the memory that comes to mind every time I hear it is when I was in line for The Raptor at Cedar Point (amusement park in Sandusky Ohio) with my friend and boyfriend at the time and the DJ for that ride was wrapping up and he said this was the second to last song. Everyone in the line was jamming and singing along except for these 2 girls who were probably only around 13-15 years old and looking around at everyone like they had all their minds because EVERYONE was jamming (soany air guitars were being played in that line!) and they had obviously had never heard the song before. I always see their faces when I hear this song. Side note: the very last song the DJ played was Bohemian Rhapsody and needless to say it was the same reaction from everyone waiting in line and also, the 2 teenage girls as well, lol! I just remember thinking “these poor girls probably feel like they are in an alternate universe”, because they had no clue what was goin on.

I like going back to the live version in Oakland 1977, for the music.......AND watching all those beautiful enthusiastic ladies going absolutely nuts! Damn! I wonder how many lovelies were there? Most are grandmothers now. That energy shows today’s young what it was really like to live & experience the “70’s” as a teen/twenty something for concerts that were oh, so memorable and $$affordable$$! What memories! $3.50-$10 max for an experience. Now they are $50-$350+. Immersing one’s self in these vids w/beats headphones cranked up is the next best thing to actually being there. And Jamel’s reaction just makes it so more real. On to the next!!!!!🎸🎹🥁😎👍❤️✌️

Yes you need to find the live version. I saw them last November in Baltimore, they still got it! Simple Man is another one you play back to back. See the live version when they were in Jacksonville, FL

The BEST Lynyrd Skynyrd song is “On The Hunt”. If you’re gonna react to them, you ha a to do that one. I’m not a huge Skynyrd fan, but this one is amazing.

JAMES MOORE I like Poison Whiskey also. Just don’t think it’s on the level of On the Hunt. I think it just bothers me that most people only know them for Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama. Not that they’re bad songs but they sooooo much better songs to offer.

This song was written about Duane Allman. The Allman brothers lived in Daytona and hung out in Jacksonville and the two groups became good friends.

You want to talk about a deep song, I had listen to it 1000's of times. It was until I was at a funeral that this was played for the person as their last song by requested by the person. It was then did this song really hit me what Ronnie Van Zant was saying.

Another main & major anthem & soundtrack of our lives at that time, for a decade or two, or forever. And one of the very first songs many of us learned to play on the guitar - it has all the parts of a great guitar lesson lol.

Nah fam. I love GnR, I remember my first time playing the newly released Appetite on vinyl and it blew my fucking mind. And I am fond of November Rain, as I am of all their stuff. But it is heavy on the fromage. Welcome to the Jungle, My Michelle, Mr Brownstone - all better tracks than NR or anything that came towards the end of their original career. Overworked, over produced cheese with a laughable video. Masterpiece it is not!

They most often ended concerts with this EPIC song...Warning: If you you don’t like guitar solos stop now. Saw these guys front row in 1974, Milwaukee. I was24 and already loved this band but this band can do it as well live as they did in the studio. One of the greatest guitar centric bands ever and much more. This song has it all, lyrics, introduction, a building transition into the face ripping, foot stomping stand up a play air guitar epic. Every great has a few songs that stand out and this is the one for Lynyrd Skynyrd. RIP
