The plane was in the town I live in, Brookhaven MS. It was behind a 6 foot chain link fence. There are a lot of people that have giant parts of the plane here. The American Flag emblem on the tail section was cut off with a torch. The plane was right across the road from The Woodman of the World building that had dances on Friday nights where the music of Lynyrd Skynyrd was played every Friday night. The wreckage of the plane was haunting to see!!!

My then best friend worked at the Miami Oklahoma airport and I knew this plane had landed. When I got there my friend was fueling the plane. As he got down from the wing two limo's pulled up at the back of the plane. I was standing at the stairs that went up to the plane. Steve Gaines and Ronnie Van Zant came up to me, stopped and we spoke for a few minutes, mainly about Miami and where they were headed. Cassie got out of her limo and comes up and says "hello" to me and goes up the stairs with the rest of them. As the stairs rose back up into the bottom of the plane, Steve Gaines came back to the top of the stairs and waved goodbye. I was the last person in Miami Oklahoma to see them alive. Not proud of that but it is part of my history.

I have watched probably every live concert footage on U tube. Billy Powel often had a Budweiser cab sitting on top of his piano. At one concert, want to say Asbury park Ronnie took a drink out of can, it was night so you couldn't tell but Ronnie held it uo & said this concert briught to you by Budweiser King of Beer. It wasn't a plug, he was just makin a joke, he lived his Buds. For historical purposes I find this video fascinating but made me want to cry, just like every time I think abt it. One of the best Rock bands & most underrated of all time!

I teared up watching this. This has been my favorite band since I was a young kid listening to my brother's records that I wasn't supposed touch. Thankfully he had good taste in music. I was happy to see that you seemed to actually care and respect the task at hand. It was a tragic loss of human life and a tragic loss for music. There are rumors and accounts that people were looting the scene of personal items before the victims were even removed, which sickens me to think that people like that even exist.
@kellyhistoryseekers3090
5 жыл бұрын
Jeanette, we cared very much about recovering the items from the scene so the could be saved and preserved. Each of us had our own personal reason for wanting to go outside of preserving the History. For Scott and Heath, they grew up in Alabama and listened to the band growing up. They have been saving History for years with their metal detecting. I was actually born the day of the crash. The band was one of my Dad's favorites and Freebird was played at his funeral. I am the main historian of the group and this gave me a chance to connect with my Dad. It also made me realize how much the word has changed since 1977. So many of those who arrived at the scene to help were the ordinary people who had tractors and pickup trucks to access that swamp. In today's world, many people would sit back and watch. Heroes saved lives to keep this accident from being much, much worse. Thank you for watching.

That beer can you found might be from the adjoining property owner. He helped get all of them out of the plane, both survivors and the deceased. It took him 25 years to go back. When he was finally able, he would go late in the evening and bring two beers with him. He would drink one and set it down then leave one for Ronnie.
@HistorySeekers
4 жыл бұрын
We checked into that. If you will notice in our community section we posted a picture of the can. We found a Florida tax stamp. So unless he went to Florida for a beer run then buried it under crash debris. we think its unlikely. We did however find bush beer cans from MS that we do think were left by someone else. They were on top of the ground and opened. If you have trouble finding the picture from the FL marked can let me know I can post a direct link for you. We were also able to confirm the can was from Florida via the stamp and verified by Budweiser. As to who purchased the beer in Florida and had it on the plane will likely never be solved.

I can still hear him practicing 'Free Bird" on that beat-up old red guitar, for years afterwards. His best friend convinced him to let him borrow his new album, and they had a falling out soon after. He never got his album back and he has never forgotten or forgiven. Even until this very day. We have been divorced near 25 years and he still asks me if I remember that his first release Skynyrd, "Street Survivor" was never returned. And I do remember. Thanks to him, I never bought a 45 record. He told me when I was 17, if I was gonna buy music, to at least buy the album and give the band a listening chance and that I would never regret it. Wise words coming from a 19 year old. Even tho things didn't work out for us, I will never forget what an impact Skynyrd made in our lives and all the teenage lives around us. I regret not naming my first daughter Tuesday even now, as old as I am..

The crash would never had occured had the pilots listened to FAA tower and they were told to land at an airport the pilots decided not to they flew too high burned up too much fuel, the plane's engine was on fire previously (former flight), JoJo had a dream the plane crashed she refused to fly on the fateful day, begged them not to , Cassie begged to go by automotive vs plane, Ronnie told her something like, 'when your time is up, it's up', Ronnie had told Artimus he would die before he was 30 yrs. old, the pilots were seen previously with an open bottle of Jack Daniels, the plane , was rejected by aerosmith band, it was high miles, needed to be scrapped , NOT sold, it was over-insured, and had a policy that benefitted the plane seller, they did not cash in on the 6 deceased band members' deaths (this includes Ronnie VanZant), I have spoken to someone who was on this crash, I have personally dug up some info that is not on here, so either way, rest in peace Ronnie, Cassie , Steve, and the others who perished due to pilot error and the person who sold them a worn out, no good plane. * I have read and watched videos , most of my info. comes from that and from obtaining the FAA report of this actual flight info. * This is for informational purposes, and it is my opinions, thoughts, comments. I really love Lynyrd Skynyrd I have the bands autographs (minus Ronnie's ) and even the tribute band vest when Donnie re-vived Skynyrd and other things, I think it is the best south rock band on earth!! Ronnie was truly a gifted singer, songwriter, this band is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which they well deserve, all the singers, guitarists, pianist excellent, Donnie is great too, so is his band, but my heart lies w/ Ronnie's original band, every song is great. I guess it's cool you found some relics , too bad they scrapped the plane, the music and people made this band, you Lynyrd Skynyrd shall never be forgotten, I will listen to your music until I hear you in heaven. Artimus Pyle : the awesome drummer for Skynyrd got Ronnie off floor he had taken a few sleeping pills to sleep, got him up in in a seat and belted in,made sure everyone was buckled in seats, he had worked in military airforce I believe, he knew what to do, he ran for help,got shot but did find help. All people in that band and those who worked with band were and are fine people. God bless them all, and rest their souls who left their loved ones early due to negligence of pilots, and whom sold them the scrap heap of a plane that was not air worthy to begin with, had excessive miles, had Skynyrd used a tour bus , they would be alive today, and imagine all perfect southern rock they would have created! Lynyrd Skynyrd is got to be one of the top 10 rock groups of all time probably in the top five as far as my taste goes. The man that's been singing for the group after the group came back from the crash does a tremendous job just like the first one. I'm so happy that we can listen to records and CDs and tapes of that bygone era today. I was in the seventh grade when they died and vaguely remember the incident but as the years went by I became a big fan of theirs especially in my later years in high school.

In 77 I was 16 living in Lake County Florida. I was listening to WORJ out of Orlando when they announced that Skynyrd had gone down. I didn't sleep that night--- at all. Was a Skynyrd listener since the first album came...still am to this day. They inspired me to pick up the guitar and been playing ever since. The day Ed King passed I bought an SG and the first song I played on it was Sweet Home Alabama since that was the axe Ed composed it on. Watching y'all find these pieces from the crash...well honestly, it choked me up. For those of us that grew up in Florida in the 70's felt a kinship with The Boys From Jacksonville. It was like we lost family that night. I could go on for hours and days talking Skynyrd... Y'all take good care of those pieces you found!

Watching this video reminds me of something I read years ago. The infamous criminal John Gotti from New York had one fear that he let known to his inner circle of people. He was terrified of flying. He would use cars, buses, taxi cabs, even boats to get from point A to point B and enjoy himself. But the one absolute fear he had was flying. Looking at this video I can say with an honest head and and honest heart, anybody no matter who you are should be scared of using planes. Like my 8th grade science teacher once told me, if you have a problem with a plane what are you going to do, pull over to a cloud and stop?

Yup, the plane had crapped out before and needed repairs. The company was too cheap to have it fixed by someone else so they told the pilots to keep flying it until they got it back to Louisiana the charter company had a facility there that could fix it cheaper. The sad thing is they could have just flown commercial to the concert in Louisiana then got back on the private plane after it was fixed. Cassie had actually bought a ticket on a commercial flight but Steve talked her in to flying with the rest of the band. Amazingly it didn't suffer a mechanical failure but was simply ran out of fuel. So preventable and so sad.

@@HistorySeekers There were a few instruments they kept on the plane for entertainment. As I heard it some of that stuff was never recovered. Some of it has to be around that area. I believe the spot you guys are on is the actual impact spot. There is probably a lot more interesting pieces and artifacts a few yards out. I would mark that as the center and go in circle sweeps from there. There were also 2 luggage cases they stated were never found. I had a copy of the original FAA report a friend gave me on about my 20th birthday after I graduated flight school my best friends father worked the crash site. My friend had a lot of interesting unknown facts about the crash which included a list of unfound unlocated personal items. I would have loved have been along on this adventure. That was def a trim tab wheel of an old Convair. A pretty stable old bird as well. They just don't fly very well without fuel. It would pay off to return see if you can locate some of those personal items are there as well. I believe the land owner leveled the spot after the crash with alot of debris still there. Whether or not he carted off stuff during the first days of the recovery process is also note on that FAA report. It indicates they meaning the FAA did make an attempt to find some of the items surviving members were requesting being returned to them. Keep in mind the FAA notes on that report more than two craters about 4 feet deep. Obviously the two engines and landing gear were heavy enough to make craters where stuff could still be in those crater holes.

Sadly, Ronnie was even warned about it and said that if it was his time to go then it was his time to go and told everybody to get on it. I remember that day, I remember my brothers sitting at the kitchen table with my dad, listening to the radio reports, and just being in shock. They had tickets to go to the show at LSU. I sent my brothers the link to this video and they both recall that day vividly. I say thank you for the video and thank you for the respect y'all found.

A completely worthy historical event to dig at. I'm amazed at the number of items that were missed by the FAA when they were picking up at the site. I thought they were way more thorough than that.

Do not go on a tour to the crash site with Krystina Anderson. She does not have permission to be on the crash site from the land owner and was removed by law enforcement June 6, 2020 most recently for trespassing.

Yes, that was the lady accusing us of trespassing. The land owner told us if we caught her there to have her arrested and anyone with her.

As a life long Skynyrd fan (I'm 66) I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Seeing those aircraft parts is a haunting reminder of that tragic day when young lives were lost. Great video Heath

I can still remember this so clearly. It was approximately 10:00pm on my 16th birthday, October 20th, 1977, when my friend called, just as I was about to go to bed, to let me know that he had just heard that Lynyrd Skynyrds plane had crashed. Needless to say, I was shocked by the news. For some reason, I asked him if Ronnie Van Zant had died, but he didn't know whether he had or not. When I got to school the following morning, I headed straight for the library to read the about it in the newspaper, and that is when I learned that Ronnie had in fact died. I remember thinking that there was no way Skynyrd could carry on without him, and I felt very sad.

I happened to be in my room listening to an FM rock station when a dj reported that there had been a crash, this was about 8:30 pm Central time. The plane went down close to 7pm.

I have a really unique piece of that airplane. I have the flag off of the tail fin. That day a huge part of Americana died. To me that's what that flag represents. I don't think I could ever sell it. Great video, thanks for sharing!

@@kellyhistoryseekers3090 Thanks Kelly. I thought the same thing about what y'all found. Especially the beer can. That was too cool. When I use the word cool, I am not making reference to anything about the plane crash being cool. But...The fact that these artifacts can be saved and used to remember the 2nd "Day the Music Died" only pays tribute to their legacy in my book.
