Traboules (from Latin transambulare - to walk through - via vulgar Latin trabulare meaning "to cross") are a type of passageway primarily associated with the city of Lyon. The traboules were originally built and used by silk manufacturers to transport their products through the city, thus protected from all weather conditions. Lyon, at the cross road from Northern and Southern Europe had been a important fair in Europe since early Middle Age and developed in the 16th Century an important silk industry thanks to a monopoly granted by King Francis I. For nearly several centuries, most European royal palaces were provided with the Lyon silk and still are for restoration on special command on the traditional looms.

Virginie was our tour guide on the Best of Paris tour in 2015. She is pure class, a total encyclopedia of knowledge and one of the reasons I love Rick Steves' tours!

Loved Lyon! Was on the river boat ride up the Rhone, so only had a day to spend in the city. Could visit Lyon again in a heartbeat!

I'm sorry, but this just doesn't look all that inviting and romantic to me. It's just a dirty old hallway leading to a light shaft, and presumably on eventually to another street. Seems like a good place to get mugged.

I live on Lyon, don't worry the old town is safe af, maybe to much. As the rest of the city tho (1st of the most livable city of France and Europe in 2015-2017-2018-2019)
