After some time, I have to add that the velocity varies from 15 to 127 on the white keys and 15 to 108 on the black keys (at least on the model I own). Thanks for all your comments, that awesome 🙏

Hi Frank and thanks for this great review but i have question to ask, Im not a piano player but i am thinking of getting this keystation 88 MK3 i was planning on getting it so i can use it to write/even learn to play piano, Im a guitar player and i understand that it is recommend to use fully weighted hammer action keys to start learning to play piano but at the moment i can't not afford the fully weighted keys but instead im looking to use this keystation 88 MK3 as a start, im planning on using to mostly work with piano sounds and also use it for writing orchestral strings parts instead of synths or electronic tones, do you think the Keystation 88 MK3 will be the right choice for me? and thanks again for this awesome review!

Thanks a lot for your comment! That's great that you wish to make your own music. Having a MIDI keyboard is indeed a great addition to be able to play tons of instruments or use sounds in a DAW. I am a guitar player myself and I love using a MIDI keyboard for that. You will also benefit to learn the piano, especially to understand music theory. Chords are much simpler on the piano for example ;) To answer your question, I think that it should be ok for you to learn on this keyboard, especially to get the basics. But if you want to play the piano itself, I would suggest that you try to access an acoustic piano from time to time to get used to it. At least on a digital piano. By the way, there is a model of digital piano which not that much expensive (about £220 at Thomann). You should have a look at my buying guides here: www.guide2music.com/gear/ You can also check out the links in the description to learn more about piano playing ;) Have you already written songs or pieces of music that I could listen to? I would love to hear your music! I will soon publish some original music here as well (or on a new channel).

Perfect for my little studio ;) I will use it for making music along with my guitar. Don't know yet what I will do in the end, but I've got different ideas in mind or in my computer! By the way, you can use the link in the description to buy it if you want to support the channel (at no extra cost) ;) I would also suggest checking out this page to get started on the piano: www.guide2music.com/play-the-piano/

Hello Frank , thank you for this great review ! This keyboard looks very interesting for this price , but i wonder if the velocity will please me because im used to 1 to 127 on my other keyboard , maybe the 15 minimum is because of garage band , did you had a keyboard that had the full range on garage band ? can you test the velocity in another software ? That would be lush

Thanks for your comment :) I just tested it in MPC Beats and I also get 15 as a minimum velocity value. In my experience, it is not an issue and I can play with a lot of dynamics and I play mostly classical piano. But maybe in your particular situation is not enough. What music do you play?

Nice video, thanks for answering. Actually the velocity isn't bad at all, it's good, especially for the money you are paying, there are digital pianos like Yamaha p45 with worse velocity response than this M-Audio Keystation 88 MK3. I think I'll go with the 61 version )

Thanks for your comment :) I think that the feel of the keys is pretty good for the price indeed. I don't know if it is exactly the same for the 61-key model but I just went to read a few reviews about the 61 model and people have the same kind of feeling, so you should be good :) To be honest, I hesitated between those two, but I wanted to get all the keys, in particular, to teach but also because I love to play classical music.

@frankelda9403

I know, the same problem for me except that my monitors have still enough volume and don't crack even at max gain :) If you look at the miniGrand interface, you can see that the volume is not set at the maximum value even if the slider on the keyboard is. At initialisation it seems that it doesn't read the actual position of the slider. What I do is either move the slider and put it at max or I change directly the volume on the software. The dynamics can be change also on the software by the way,

Thank you for the useful information. When you say that it has "full-size keys", did you maybe verify if the widh of an octave is actually about 16,5 cm as in a real acoustic (or standard digital) piano, or more close to only 16 cm, as in most of the non-weighted keyboards I could try? I am curious also about the lenght of the white keys: they look little shorter (maybe about 14 cm instead of the typical 15 cm and more of an acoustic piano). Thank you !
@frankelda9403
3 жыл бұрын
I just measured and I confirm that the width of an octave is 16.5 cm. The keys are indeed a little shorter: 13.8 cm. Well observed! I think that the length of the keys is something quite variable from one keyboard to the other.
@r.a.5672
3 жыл бұрын
@@frankelda9403 Wow, you are so kind! Thank you so much! And that's very interesting: it's much more important the key width than the key lenght! So the fact that it's exactely 16.5 it's very good. About the lenght: yes, you are right: that parameter varies much depending on the brands. But "good" digital pianos have more or less all about 15 cm. In acoustic pianos you can find longer keys, of course...! Thanks a lot again!

How about playing close to the fallboard into the black keys? Many semi-weighted keyboards are hard to play when you go into the black keys. Thanks for this review !!
@frankelda9403
3 жыл бұрын
Well, they are indeed harder to play close to the fallboard, but it would be the same on any keyboard for mechanical reasons. A key can be seen as a lever so if you press where the lever is attached, it will be more difficult. Like closing a door by pushing close to the hinge. I don't find it so different compared to acoustic pianos. The way to handle it is to develop a good technique. The trick is to play more in the middle or closer to the tip of the black keys by moving your hand forward or backward to adapt the position of your fingers depending on their size. If you use your middle finger, you will have to move your hand backward (relative to the fallboard), when move it upward to play with the pinky for example. It is a bit difficult to explain in a comment, I shall make a video about that ;)

@@frankelda9403 Thanks for your answer: "I don't find it so different compared to acoustic pianos" is exactly what I asked for.
