What year was that disk in your video made? I used to have a disk of the same exact recording, only it was on a much older disk than the one in your video. The one in your video sounds like a re-issue of the original early 1930's version ...I had my 1930's disk back when I was little, and it had a very old-fashioned photo of the lady printed on the label, and I loved to play it. I'm glad to find your video, niponpolydor1... thank you. :-)

Michiyakko first recorded Tanko-bushi somewhere around 1949. The song was virtually unknown outside of Kyushu until it hit widespread popularity in the 50s all over Japan, with artists like Michiyakko, Masao Suzuki, Yukie Kubo and others all releasing their own versions. Chances are, your version was released somewhere in the 50s. Teichiku was very inconsistent with its record label designs, and there are many different labels for this same song. I have this song with a mint green label and one with a tan label. I tried to find a release of this song from the 1930s in the National Diet Library, which has a collection of all records from the major producers, and the only one I could find was an instrumental version by the Columbia Orchestra in 1937.

@@signbear999 Thank you signbear999... I now stand corrected about the date I thought my record was from. Mine had a light yellowish tint to the label, and had Michi Yakko singing 'Soy Ran Bushi' on the other side. 🙂

@@TerryMcKean Here's a translation I made of this specific version: (There's many different versions of this song) The moon has come out, has come out Above the Miike Coal Mine. The chimney is much too high, Certainly the moon is smoked! Away from the circles of dancing friends, We’re two shadows on the road of secret love. The fields of grass are swaying so much We pretend not to see the moon. “Roll up your hem and take off your shoes,” I say, pulling myself closer to you, “What if they get wet?” In the rain, late at night, with one umbrella. At leading songs, we’re the best in Japan. At digging holes, we’re the best in the mine. I hit the barrel drums with a smile, Feeling like I'm the image of manliness. When the moon comes out, the songs come out. We’ll sing Tanko-bushi with pride. Then, at the window of the coal room, I’ll see the face of that cute little girl.
