The slide release works with the magazine on only. An extra safety, In my opinion. I guess it is exactly to account for the situation you described. If you release the slide (either on purpose or accidentally) prior to inserting a new mag, you then have to manually load a new round into the chamber. By having this extra "safety" it ensures you have the new mag in before you push that button, and then theres no need for the user to re-cock the gun.
@BeniAmi
3 ай бұрын
That is actually not accurate. The slide release will work well if you do not manually push it up, and what pushes it up is the racking of the slide on an empty mag. That is because the mag follower pushes it up only about half way into the groove, and that is why it is easyer to release it with your thumb. And if you rack it on an empty mag or you have fired the last round in the mag, and you release your empty mag from the pistol, you can still easily release the slide with or without a mag in the pistol.

I bought the regular shield plus for my wife for Mother’s Day. Immediately noticed the same thing with the slide release. I will say that it’s probably 50% easier after about 200 rounds through the gun but it’s still on the tougher side. I have 15 years of landscaping to assist with dealing with the amount of pressure it takes to release it but my wife struggles a lot more. Like you said, otherwise it’s a fantastic gun. I’m ordering the performance model this weekend for Father’s Day 😉

Just picked up a standard Shield+ today and the slide lock/release is a bit stiff. My work around is to put my purse down and apply a little extra force and it does release the slide. Kidding aside the control is pretty stiff yet I can actuate with a firm press and it's not super hard to actuate either, just a bit more resistance than most pistols. My original Shield also had very stiff controls and a stiff recoil spring, stiff magazine springs but everything smoothed out and loosened up after 100 rounds. I expect the same for the + version.

I just purchased a Shield Plus (manufactured in March 2022) and was pleasantly surprised that my slide release worked well (on a loaded magazine, not empty...similar to my other brands). I will clean, lubricate, and dry fire this week before taking it to the range for evaluation next week. I haven't had good luck with S&W semi-autos in the past but have high hopes for this one. It has plenty of competition to live up to regarding my Sigs, CZs, Glocks, and Springfields...all of which have never malfunctioned in the 500 - 1500 rounds of (all ammo types) I have put through them. Too many guns and not enough ammo or time!

Hey! I bought the same one & same deal with mine. I feel the same way you do! However from everything that I have read and seen about shooting 2-300 rounds “break-in” the best advise I received is too leave slide open, which weakens slide spring tension, simulating shooting it 200 to 300 times. So I’m going to leave it open a few days till it’s easier, hopefully. I sanded the grip down with 180 grit sand paper till it didn’t bite my hands anymore! Thank GOD it doesn’t affect the finish at all! All guns should come with this trigger! Try that advise though! Good honest video! I wonder if the regular shield plus 9 mm have this problem. Good Luck man!

That slide release loosens up over time. They made it harder and last longer than some of the older models. I didn't know it was a problem until I inspected some of other models. The slides almost release without cause. One was an accident waiting to happen. I'm sure they will rework it. I'm actually glad it was that tight at first, but did throw me off. Until I inspected my M&P's, the full size. Looks like after a year I have to replace the release assembly on my full sized models and my service one. Smith is replacing it on the M2.0 40 I have. The older ones were soft and shear off the tips over time where the catch is. They advised the shield plus was built to outlast those. Albeit, it is very hard at first to do so. But definitely, use is it's friend over time.

Smith doesn't call it a slide release. It's a lock. That being said, my full size 2.0 with a couple thousand rounds through it releases now. My brand new PC shield plus is tight, but will release if you put some ass into it. My wife however has trouble with it on both.

I asked how much and he said they just got it in let me ask the boss, well it cost me 625 plus tax and I got a holster and 200 rounds of ammo. When I got home I realize this one does not have the optic plate and no cleaning kit but it came with a small M&P flashlight and pocket knife. I have watched many videos/reviews on the shield plus. One video demonstrated that if you pull the slide back with the magazine in, the slide release does release much easier. When the person pulled the slide back without the magazine in, it was dam near impossible to release the slide with the side release button. Conclusion: A magazine must be inserted when the slide is pulled back to make the release button work properly.

I wouldn’t put a red dot on this particular gun, especially if you conceal carry it for protection. I guarantee you in a self-defense situation, you’re not going to care if it has a red dot on it or not because in a gun battle you’re only gonna have enough time to point and shoot quickly. If you’re primarily going to take it to the range practice and not going to conceal carry then a red dot would be nice on it.

I had the same problem loading my 13th bullet in the magazine, it was so tight to put in. I bought magazine loader that pushes down on the remaining bullets so you can load it easily. You will discover that a magazine loader will save you a headache and your fingers a painful moment while trying to force bullets in a magazine with a tight spring. The magazine loader I bought was not cheap, Something like $35 I recall it’s made in Israel and you can load various calibers for different handguns.

When you fill the 13 round mag notice that there's no clearance left in the mag and when inserted into the gun with slide closed it literally jams the top round against the underside of the slide creating a lot of drag that causes malfunctions . Okay I am happy now I tried the Plus again with different ammo and it was flawless . The first tryout I took only Blazer brass 115 hardball and the gun would malfunction with full mag and one in chamber on first shot every time but I see that measuring with a caliper at the bottom of the case just above the extractor groove it measured .002 larger than the two types of ammo I tried next which was Browning 115 hardball and Winchester PDX1 . I fired 100 rounds of Browning with no problems and fired the Winchester PDX1's 10 times keeping the mag topped off for each shot with no problems . I think the Blazers being. 002 larger at that area on the case multiplied times 13 made .026 and wouldn't cycle that first round . I love this gun now but will buy another Shield Plus if S&W ads the slide release like they use on the Compact 2.0 .

I bought the exact same handgun that you and I had the same issue. I took my gun to the range once. Afterwards I cleaned it and sprayed some gun oil on it. I no longer have that problem with pushing down the button to make the slide move. Honestly it’s a matter of breaking it in, but get a can of gun cleaning oil and spray inside the gun and yes spray the button. It’s a lot easier when I firmly press my thumb on the button. After 200 rounds that should of broke it in, but the spray done the trick to loosing it up for my gun. I bought a 40 M&P Performance Center M2.0 with ported barrel. Both my guns look like a matching set except my full size gun is a 40 cal. I had the same problem but after taking it to the range and later spraying the inside and outer button no problem. On this particular gun the trigger is different but I don’t have a problem with it except I do worry one day the trigger will break. I might get a gunsmith to install a apex trigger on the 40cal. I sprayed both my guns with extra cleaning solution to a point it was dripping wet then cleaned the excess gun oil, done a dry fire several times. Problem fixed. I understand your point that it’s a Performance Center gun and it shouldn’t have that issue right out of the box, but unfortunately these guns are still mass produced. I do think Smith & Wesson should have a little closer quality control on their performance center handguns. Someone out there is not always going to get a perfect gun. I don’t like the ugly cardboard boxes that they are putting the guns in. You would think for the extra money, they would give you a decent gun case. You might have to have a gunsmith file down the slide or do loosen up the button making it easier to press down on it. In a gun battle, you certainly don’t want that problem reloading it. The only thing I hate is that Smith & Wesson only include one 13 round magazine. They should of included two of them instead of the 10 round magazine. I don’t like my pinky finger hanging using the 10 round magazine. It has been impossible to find 13 round magazines for this shield Plus. I want at least two more so I can conceal in a magazine holder. I’m not a fan of the safety on this gun, but my gun dealer had only one gun in stock and I didn’t want to wait a long time on a special order. I like this gun very much, I just wish that Smith & Wesson provided a accessory gun holster for concealment purposes. Finding a proper fitting concealment holster for this particular gun was difficult to find. Luckily out of a hundred different kind of holsters that my dealer had for various firearms, he only had one that fit this small compact gun with a decent fit.

About the "slide release" I own several of these. I don't think S&W ever planned on this being a release. It's refered to as a "slide stop" everywhere they talk about it in the manual. I also own 2ez models and the slide stop is more pronounced and with the lighter pressure recoil spring in the ez models it will easily release the slide. Be interesting to see what S&W tell you if you hear from them.

Instead of sanding that side of the grip for comfort I just pull my underwear up on my side and it guards against that wonderful ergonomic grip very well!

Slide release gets easy after it breaks in, about 150 rounds. Mine did, anyway.

The slide lock will loosen up. I have the original shield and it was the same situation.

I had a similar issue with my M2.0 shield .45. I had to work the slide release over and over to get it to work with ease. Sucked.

I'd keep shooting it instead of filing anything just yet. I've heard the same thing, and they apparently start working right after getting broken in a while. Probably not what anyone wants to hear during an ammo crisis, but...

Your right about it . I pit about 150 rounds through it today, it got a hair better ,I mean I can get it to release now with allot of pressure, I mean allot ,where I have to use two hands lol.

@@PatrickthePatrick Here's hoping it gets smoother as it goes along. Mine (just the vanilla plus with no safety) shows up at my FFL tomorrow. Already got some night sights and a shield TLR-6 sitting here waiting =P

Bro all their slide releases are like that. It sucks but it's not a defect, just how they manufacture it.

@@SeaBass75 You got a performance center model 3.1 without a safety? I haven’t been able to find that and was told they don’t make the PC model 3.1 without a safety only the 4 inch model comes without the thumb safety ..

I don’t like the safety button, it was not a deal breaker for me to buy one with it. I just simply switch off the safety and I’m ready to Rock ‘n’ roll. I didn’t want to do a special order and wait possibly a very long time to get one without a safety button. I can understand why people don’t like safety buttons on their firearms especially when you’re in a life-threatening situation and you have to use your firearm for self protection, and then all of a sudden you can’t shoot. Some people have actually lost their life cause the safety button was on, They couldn’t fire their firearm and they panicked, While they try to figure out what’s wrong with their gun, then someone else has to drop on you. No thanks I’m not a fan of safety buttons.

They call it a slide lock. Not slide release. That's why you have to pull itn back first. Ask Smith

I did actually and they told me if I want to send send it in I could . If it were strictly a slide lock it wouldn't have texture on the top of it to push down . It would only be on the bottom to push up to lock .
