Sharing an excerpt from my choreography for this தமிழ் நாட்டுப் புறப்பாட்டு (Naattupura Paattu) on அம்மன் (Amman)- the Mother Goddess - as she is addressed in rural parts of my homeland, தமிழ்நாடு (Tamilnadu). She is addressed in many different ways - ஆத்தா (Aathaa), கருமாரி (Karumaari), மகமாயி (Magamaayi), நீலி (Neelima), திருசூலி (Tirusooli), முத்துமாரி (Muthumaari) and many many more. She is a கிராம தேவதை (Giraama Devadai) or a village goddess- a form of துர்கை (Durga) or காளி (Kaali). மாரி (Maari) translates to mean “rain” and the Tamil month of ஆடி (Aadi) is very special for her. She is as ancient as the human civilization and worshipping HER has existed for many many thousands of years way before the origin of worshipping Siva/Vishnu. She is worshipped by offering toddy and meat. Devotees dance with the கரகம் (Karagam) on their heads and வேப்பிலை (Veppilai-Neem leaves). Some perform பூ மிதித்தல் (Poo midithal- Walk on burning embers).
The way she is celebrated in a very unique way with dance and music, is just a sight to behold!!! This particular song is a lullaby to Mariamman to soothe her. It is set in a folk melody that follows typical traditional Tamil music, rhythm and grammar- A music that can easily make you go into a trance! Usually traditional Tamil musical instruments are used, like உருமி (Urumi), எக்காளம்(Ekkalam), உடுக்கை (udukkai), தவில் (Tavil). I have lost myself many times while being part of these festivals. ❤️❤️❤️
Sung by L R Easwari amma (There is no place in Tamilnadu where you cannot hear her Amman songs; especially in ஆடி month when you wake up to this music😊- It’s a good day)
Next time you visit Tamilnadu, please take some time to visit our villages and take in the amazing beauty of our gods and goddesses!
