Co-commissioned by M+ and Art Basel, and presented by UBS, Yang Fudong’s new site-specific work Sparrow on the Sea is currently on view on the M+ Facade. Shot in Hong Kong in January 2024, the black-and-white film weaves together scenes from seaside villages and nocturnal city streets. The work is intended to function as a short poem, blending moments from Hong Kong’s past and present to offer a glimpse into an unpredictable future.
M+ has organised a few free screenings at the M+ Cinema in March 2024. In the post-screening talk between the artist and M+ Associate Curator for Digital Special Projects, Kate Gu, they unpacked the story behind the creation of this work.
