One year later and it's still...just an iPad. A glorious, beautiful, well designed piece of technology, but still, just an iPad. But I don't necessarily think that it has to be a bad thing. I owned the 2020, 12.9" iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard, and fell for Apple's "what's a computer" tagline, as did many others out there. I quickly came to realize, that as much as Apple would like to market this as a computer, it really can't replace a traditional laptop for those that need full desktop computing needs. I LOVE my iPad, but I also needed a true computer for my needs so I ended up selling the 2020 iPad Pro, and bought a M1 Macbook Air and a M1 11" iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard and now, I'm satisfied. Between the new Universal Control feature heading our way soon outside of beta, and the fact that I can easily throw my 11" iPad Pro into my purse for days when I need mobile computing, I feel like I've got the best ecosystem for my needs. The only thing I am looking for now, and I hope to see coming this year, is Apple to come out with their own monitors again. Preferably something that looks like the new colourful iMac's. Then I'd set up a desktop area, but right now, don't need - I'm happy to use my Macbook Air for that desktop usage and the iPad Pro for mobility. But - I think it's important to note that I think Apple has moved away from marketing it as a one and done device, and I think they've smartly marketed it as a supplementary device. The hardware is leaps and bounds better than every other tablet on the market, but the software...the software holds it back. But I think we can all agree at this point, that this is an intentional holdback. Apple does not want it to replace your need for a full computer. They want you to have as many products in the Apple ecosystem as possible.
@cameronbosch1213
2 жыл бұрын
Yep. They've changed their Why iPad page to "here's a few reasons why your next computer might be an iPad" to "here are just a few of the countless things you can do with iPad". They're FINALLY not marketing it as a laptop replacement, because for most people, it can't be because of software limitations, but it is a very good supplementary device, although it's very expensive for that purpose (although the 11 inch iPad Pro is probably the sweet spot for most who can afford it).
@krystalmcleod0916
2 жыл бұрын
@@cameronbosch1213 exactly. I think it’s still the best tablet on the market and definitely worth the money in my eyes, but it is very expensive, especially when you add on the magic keyboard and pencil. I downgraded my storage needs and size needs, and sold my 2020 12.9” iPad Pro and MK what what it cost to buy a brand new M1 11” and MK and then bought a base model M1 Air and while I spent more (Apple’s intention) I should have done this purchase this way the first time in 2020.
@knate44

That's what actually sold me on the iPad mini. It is an real powerful and flexible tool that fits nicely in between my full sized keyboard laptop and my phone. It actually won me over INTO the apple ecosystem, which is kind of amazing. I think the Ipad is the real key there, the fact it is the fanciest version is just kind of overkill. I'd absolutely love an iPad pro but I really can't justify it for the price of a brand new macbook which also runs the same powerful CPU, and is better able to make use of it.

@@krystalmcleod0916 I too bought my 2020 12.9" with the keyboard to replace my old Touch Bar MacBook (that I sold once M1 chips were announced)... but after a year of using it as my main laptop I realized it just wasn't doing it for me. Just bought a MacBook and sold the keyboard. I am just going to use it as a vastly overpriced couch Netflix device, which makes me feel like an idiot for paying that much but it sure is good for that!
@krystalmcleod0916

@@TheScottAF I don’t think you’re an idiot at all. Many of us did the exact same thing. It is always wonderful and exciting to be an early adopter of new and innovative technology, and sometimes we win, and sometimes we lose. There has been some amazing technology developed and released to the general public in the last couple decades, and every product that you see come out, is obsolete before being released. I often believe that Apple and other tech companies are releasing one or two generations behind what they’ve already developed. As it is often the case, money wins against releasing the best in technology advancements - there is nothing stopping Apple from making the iPad Pro into one hellva computer, other than Apple themselves. They want you to buy as many pieces of their arsenal of Apple products as possible, and the way to do that is to make their products fantastic, perhaps the best, but still leave them with one or two issues that can be resolved in “future iterations”. It’s the name of the game…what’s next? Though I didn’t need two mobile computing devices, I am glad I have them both - the MacBook Air is suitable for my desktop needs and the iPad, like you, is a really fantastic, overpriced entertainment device. But I’m currently typing on the Magic Keyboard as we speak, at work, since it travels with me in my purse each day. Though the MacBook Air is small, it is not small enough to fit in my purse and for that reason alone, I own both. Money wise, it’s a stupid purchase, but if money is no object, and you find uses for both, own both. I enjoy the advancement of technology, and I can look at every purchase I make with a very cynical eye - I never look at these purchases as wise, because every single item I own, already has a new iteration waiting in the wings to be released.

Love my M1 iPad Pro 11. I am a Realtor and Property Manager, and my iPad Pro has completely replaced my MacBook Pro as my business device. The iPad Pro is literally the perfect computer for what I do. It was an easy decision for me to get rid of my 2019 MacBook Pro(hated the dang ribbon bar). I got the new M1 Mac Mini with 16gb ram for desktop, and a new 11" M1 iPad pro for my mobile purposes. I chose the 11” because the screen is big enough for doing work on, but still super portable. Paid less for the two of them together than I did for just my MBP. It's the perfect setup for me. I create and work with contracts, pdf's, and documents on a daily basis. It is so much easier, convenient, and more intuitive to use the iPad for the work I do. In fact, I would go so far as to say, in my opinion the laptop is limiting and cumbersome compared to the iPad Pro for the type of work I do. Jeeze, even the camera on it is good enough to use for most of the photos I need for a property listing. It streamlined my workflow, and has definitely made my work more fun. Cloud storage is cheap nowadays, as is fast external storage. I got the M1 iPad Pro 11 with 256gb, but have 2TB iCloud+ for $10 month, 1TB of cloud storage with MS Office 365 and OneDrive. I also have 2TB of Google Drive storage for $10 a month. On top of that, I have a couple of external 1TB USB C SSD's, and a few USB 3.1 512GB flash drives. So, storage is not a problem. It easily runs any of the realty apps I need to use, so only 8gb ram is no problem. And, it has the same M1 processor the 1TB and up models have, so power is also not a problem. Don't have the magic keyboard but bought the Logitech Combo Touch and I love it. I also bought a Logitech MX Anywhere 2s mouse, and an Apple Pencil 2, both of which are the best. I have a few choices for carry. First, is a small traditional laptop case with many zippered compartments. Second is a nice REI sling bag with lots of pockets and storage. Last is a small REI backpack with even more pockets and storage than the sling. I can carry all the accessories I need with any of my carry choices. Working with a product that you like to use is an important key in business. No need for a dedicated camera or scanner anymore. I also use it for handwritten and typed notes, daily planning, task management, to-do's, email, web browsing, phone calls, messages, entertainment, reading books, play an occasional game, and the list goes on. I use a bunch of realty specific web apps and services but have a few others that I really like. For note management I use Notes, OneNote, GoodNotes, and Noteful. I also use a Paperlike screen protector and my Apple Pencil 2 for a natural writing experience. For document management I use MS Office, and PDF Expert. For file management I use Files, iCloud+, FileBrowser, Tonido, OneDrive, and Google. Now that I have used the iPad Pro for work, there is no going back to a laptop. The Apple ecosystem is the best. Everything just talks and works with each other seamlessly. As of right now, I have the Apple TV 4K/AirPod Pros/Apple Watch Series 6 44mm/iPhone 12 Pro Max 512GB/M1 iPad Pro 11 256GB/M1 Mac Mini 16GB RAM/256GB SSD/2019 intel i9 2.3ghz 16gb 512gb 16" MacBook Pro(sold). Really cool having an all in one that’s easy to use and light to carry for your business and personal needs. I will admit that iPad OS still has a way to go but has certainly come a long way from its humble beginnings. Been using Apple products since the mid 90’s. My first Apple computer was a Macintosh Color Classic in 1994. I am so glad Steve came back and saved Apple from the imminent death it was facing in 1997 and brought it back to the Apple we all know and love today. I'll admit that I actually cried when Steve Jobs passed away. Can't believe it's already been 10 years.

Just recently ordered a 12.9" M1 iPad Pro refurbished with an apple pencil gen 2 and a magic keyboard for $917 total--I haven't had a tablet since 2014. I have a 2020 MacBook Pro 13" I upgraded to last year that I got for $840 (1TB, 32GB RAM compared to my old 2017 model w/ 512GB and 16GB RAM, I ran out of storage and needed more RAM as well for music production amongst other things) and I'm hoping the iPad acts as intermediary between my phone and my laptop. Something I can use while my phone is charging or use alongside my laptop for better multitasking. I am excited to watch movies on it as well since I was debating getting a TV (I don't have a TV in my house and usually watch movies on my phone because its more comfortable to hold than my laptop and it has an OLED screen, but it's very small to watch movies on) but decided that this would probably yield a better movie experience compared to a TV as well as be significantly more portable and be useful in other ways as well. I also plan to take notes on it as a university student. It is absolutely crazy to me that you can get an iPhone 13 Pro Max, an Apple Watch Series 7, a 1TB SSD 32GB RAM i7 spec 13" MacBook Pro, and a 12.9" M1 iPad Pro w/ a Gen 2 Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard all together for less money than the current lowest spec 16" MacBook Pro alone. Huawei makes a display called the Huawei Mateview which has an aspect ratio of 3:2. In a couple of KZitem videos I’ve watched. When you plug an iPad Pro into the display. It’s almost able to fill the entire display although, there are 2 thin black lines going across vertically from the sides like slightly bigger side bezels. Therefore, I think if you were able to find a display that matches the aspect ratio of the iPad. You would be able to achieve a video output that fills the entire display without any black bars.

Eventually, I realized I use both Apple devices for the same everyday computing just at desk and away from desk - so why do I need a mac mini if I can plug in my iPad? Alas, Apple always finds a reason to screw me over. The front camera is in the wrong place and aspect ratio is wrong for connected monitors making my mac mini still viable but unnecessary. If I knew this was going to happen I probably would've gotten a macbook which is same/over powered and portable. The things people complain about the iPad limitations are very irritating but if we keep buying these overpriced devices it tells Apple not to change it. We have to have "courage" and not support the company that doesn't give us what we want. The customer is always right.

Don't get me wrong, I want one like so bad, but I was lucky enough to scrape enough money together for an IPad mini 6. Are you paying for features you don't need though? You mention how the amount of ram isn't actually supported by Ipad os, and I've heard reports that the M1 chip isn't actually being pushed because none of the app developers have optimized for it yet. Is it possible that unless you absolutely love the screen (which is fair and understandable) why not go with an older IPad pro model, or the Air? Is it actually 40% better than an Air or 30% better than last years model? Because to be honest, aside from the screen, it just sounds like you are talking about how great IPad Os is. The amount of stuff I get from even my IPad mini is astonishing, you just need to know the work arounds. No, I can't use a magic keyboard, but there are pretty decent Bluetooth keyboards for like a 5th if the price, while it doesn't have thunderbolt, it is can still run an ssd like nothing else, and while it isn't jaw droppingly gorgeous, you still get solid 60hz quad HD screen that does 10 bit HDR content. The apple pencil 2 is great but it works on all models besides the budget one now. I'm just wondering if for that kind of money, an M1 Macbook air wouldn't be a far better choice that would let you do more for basically the same price. Again, if you love the screen, more power to you, 120hz is real smooth, and maybe you really like LiDAR if you do a lot of measuring, but I wonder if the Air or Mini would be sufficient for the vast majority of people. It is super cool, I just don't know if you are actually using all the power you are paying for.

I have the 4th gen and i love it and was thinking of getting this one but im waiting until they release the 6th gen maybe the 7th and see what they bring to the table then. The 12.9 is perfect the way it is now but im thinking they’ll add an even bigger batter and better speakers.

They will support multitasking as soon as all the iPads have an M1 processor. Supporting a second iPad operating system would lead to the Android trap of splintered development.

Your complaint about landscape should be easily fixed by using the feature that the M1has to center the subject while in landscape mode. Not sure what it’s called but when I’ve seen it in action it centers the subject or subjects to the center of the screen. So to me that complaint is lame. Other than that I like your review.

It's useless for teaching online classes (except as a very expensive whiteboard). You pretty much need to have an actual computer to do certain tasks. Beautiful screen, outstanding hardware, just severely held back by the software. For what it is able to do, you are overpaying, but it is great at all of those tablet tasks. I bit the bullet, got one, and I use it as a glorified Nexflix machine along with as a whiteboard figuring out accounting problems with my online classes.

I love mine, I use a Logitech keyboard and mouse when typing, might upgrade this year to the cover, wouldn’t mind some feedback on it. As for watching things on the iPad Pro 11’ it’s fantastic, as you said “ No Comparison “. The versatility is great too, take anywhere, just whip it out, read, watch, type and you’re away, battery is good as a rule and compatibility to anything Apple 🍏 is superb. Very happy I bought this, as I was going to go MacBook Air, I already have a monitor- PC and decided on this for travel and work. Can do most things a computer can but is great for watching KZitem reviews and music on. No real gripes, would be the ultimate machine if you had compatibility with Mac.

I must admit that the left-edge front camera is a pisser, since I mainly use my 11" M1 256 iPad on a Magic Keyboard. Also, second-party webcams won't work on it. I just want the M1's horsepower to be released on the iPad Pro-Pro-Pro-Pro! Give me full Premiere Pro! Give me full fu@?ing MS Word! How hard is that? The M1 iPad Pro is like a superhuman titan defying space and time, but who can't decide what trousers or pair of shorts, skirt, kilt or dress to don.
