If you setup and activate "Find My" remember to disable it before you replace that Mac. This requires access to the Apple ID and its password associated with the Mac. Even if you reformat the hard drive and reinstall macOS, "Find My" still remembers in iCloud.

@@migidid iCloud keeps track of the connection between an Apple ID (email) and a specific device if you leave FindMy turned on. BUT if it has been a long time since logging into iCloud with the Apple ID, iCloud needs to send a text message to the phone connected to the Apple ID - and if that number no longer works, you're screwed. BUT an Apple Super Genius can disable that requirement. And that required (for me) an in-person visit to an Apple Genius who then had to drag out the Apple Super Genius.

I'm always checking all the things this guy said! He is right. Me, I'm the type of person that even after the setup, the first thing I'm going to do is to go to system preferences and check every single setting to see if is something there that can be tweaked that can be useful to me. I'm doing this even when downloading a new app from example, always checking their settings first before using it!

Whatever you do, DON’T use Migration Assistant to pull files from a Mac running 10.12 (or possibly, earlier); it’s got a nasty bug that will result in duplicates of Apple’s own apps in the Applications folder, and you’ll end up with both the Intel and Apple Silicon versions, both with the same name, and will confuse MacOS Catalina. Don’t ask how I know; just take my word for it. Clean-up was a B***h!! To be transparent about this, this happened to me near the beginning of this year when I received a new M1 MacBook Air for Christmas; the bug may have been fixed since, but I wouldn’t push my luck again.

I'm more on the camp of using the target drive function and transfering my files over thunderbolt/firewire. If your Macbook is too old it might require a chain of adapters that might not be worth buying, (something like TB3 to TB2, TB2 to Firewire 800 and firewire 800 to 400, which could happen if you still use a High Sierra equipped white macbook). I have a 2015 11 inch air, if I ever upgrade it to a newer macbook (I'm very likely to get out of their ecosystem in a few years), you can be sure I'm transfering everything over Thunderbolt

Your recommendation for only using Apples charger is just wrong aswell as other big companies. There is no such thing as incompatible. They either charger with enough power or don't. There was once a firmware error that did mess with the ports but it's been fixed since.

Sometimes I use my M1 MacBook Pro on. a soft surface such as a pillow, lap pillow for computers, bed comforter etc. Force click does not work consistently. The force of your finger forces the pilllow down before the trackpad surface is "forced". Drives me crazy. At 6:55 minutes you show how the "Tap to click" under trackpad. This has solved the problem completely.

changing/recovering your password on mac is actually so easy from recovery mode, it actually seems pretty insecure imo. like anyone who knows how, can get into any profile on a mac from recovery mode without knowing any passwords or ID's and there is no validation process whatsoever. As an IT support tech, Ive done this a dozen times for macbooks used by employees who were fired. Its actually pretty funny that mac users think its a more secure platform than windows. its not, like at all!

2nd hand market != blackmarket, Apple sell refurbed computers and have a few manufacturing issues here and there (like sticking the high-voltage connector right next to the cpu power line). There's a boot usb you can get that removes the password query, takes about 5 mins. If you want a 3rd party charger then make sure you supply the same (correct) voltage + amperage, if it is blocked by Apple as they have in the past (because a small chip isn't signalling the device) then go to your competition watchdog and report Apple, PSUs are cheap and easy to build and should only cost around $20. Hotkeys, yeah def use them.

M2 has been delayed for some reason, so it will take some time to launch. And if time and budget ain't a constraint then definitely go for M2. However, in your case as you need Mac on urgent basis as stated above then go for it. M1 is still a very powerful chip and as per rumours there will be minimal changes in M2.

How you can reduce battery life of your MacBook by using some 3rd party chargers ? Literally pick baseus or any cheap brand and look at wattage curve while it’s charging 😂 official chargers are the worst deal you can get. The phenomen you show happened to me as well straight from unboxing , using original charger first charge was super quick and MacBook turned off within 3 hours , turned out some battery model needed to be recalibrated , Mac OS reinstalled , there was command I had to do and battery went to 100% again

shouldn't people skip over migration because the new MBPro is missing a few updates from the OS 12? i was under the impression i should be on the latest OS update before migrating anything, (especially with the port issue M1's had before the update) also i am using a 15" 2012 MBPro core i7, 2.6 Ghz non retina with OS Catalina 10.15.7 as the last OS available on my 2012, i bought the 2012 new 10 years ago, it has tons of unused useless files and tons of relocated files from all the OS updates over the years, ive been recommended by some to do a clean start, skip migration finish set up, update OS and then pluck out what i want for files and docs and then do a {(manual set up of the preferences i like) that is the easy part my preferences.} i have 2 QUESTIONS, 1) should i skip over migration during set up, update my new MBPro then go to migration assistant. 2) for a clean start what would you recommend not migrating at all and cherry picking what i want? My 2012 email is" On My Mac" not in cloud, it is very extensive with 100's of folders / sub folders, i want my apple email to mirror my new device, the apps i can download from app store and when i sign in to my apple account they should be synced with mirror my phones apps, i want my keychain, docs, (photos which are saved in docs i dont use iPhoto) and i want my desktop. I use TimeMachine and Back Up to a brand new out of the box 5th Gen TimeCapsule, I bought 4 of them in 2016, i just retired 1 of the 4 after 8 years running and backing up daily, it was starting to get glitchy. I just opened my 2nd of 4 and the 2012 MBPro is backed Up to a Brand New TC I am going to use a 3rd of the 4 to Use for back Ups for the new 2021 MBPro M1 Max I do have a new in the box 2TB LaCie SSD drive, i could format it to APFS and move my Photos and Doc to it. Then i could load them to the 2021. My Plan was to have a 2nd Time Machine Back up of the 2021. If i move files from the 2012 i would wipe it clean first before my time machine back up. I dont use iCloud, i thought about getting 2TB for 1 month to move keychain, docs / photos and desktop, but it seems then they are in the cloud not on my actual NEW MBPro, it seems if you download them it creates a new home folder, is this a problem creating another new home folder, no one can give me a straight answer, Arthur i am hoping you'll be my savior. Arthur what would you do in my shoes to set up the 2021 from the 2012?
