very nice. glad it's drivable, might need a wastegate, it'll give you proper boost control, otherwise get a turbo with internal wastegate. you can find knock sensors in the scrapyards on most m104 engines

Yeah it needs a wastegate for sure. Ive got one on the way. And its not the sensors i need, i need a controller to detect knock and provide a 0-5v signal to the maxx ecu. MaxxECU street doesnt have a knock detector built in.

Great Work dude stoked to see you finally getting to drive it after all the work you have done to get to this point sounds great 😃, the ECU you have done it the exact same way we did buddy on our turbo Slk we needed the stock cruise control and basically everything to work like stock. It seems like you were luckier than us with the stock trans computer 👍 ours just couldn't hold the torque and slipped when it tried to shift itself, I'm assuming your having a similar issue? But the biggest hurdles are out the way. GREAT JOB Jake hats off to you man you have built a awesome machine.😃👍 Also definitely compressor surge a lot like group B spec compressor surge 🤣 it's having no issue spooling that turbo is it.

Thanks man, its been a long and tedious journey, thats still not over but is certainly beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. And for the trans, my trans valve body had several broken bits inside of it when i took it apart to rebuild it. I imagine the TCU "learned" the transmission errors and was trying to relearn the rebuilt valve body shift patterns. I may be wrong about that, because also i kept finding my trans low on fluid AF after every drive until its topped off now (i think). Now, its shifting way better, like new actually. And it shifts under power okay now too (mostly). Some slippage, but only if the gear is not "fully" engaged (?). If i let off the gas all the way when shifting, the trans grabs the next gear no problem with no slippage at all. Anyways, thanks for the praise, i super appreciate it my friend. There were times i wasnt sure if my Daario wouldnt drive again! but thats in the past now :D. And yeah i figured it was surging, was hoping others would provide some input on the matter, and you have so thanks! And yeah, NO PROBLEM spooling up like oh my god dude that thing pulls so hard, so early, when it builds boost. I could tell a huge torque difference too, in the low end, when i set up vvt. Next is the variable intake length flap to help with high rpm!

@@JakeSublime will definitely be staying tuned mate, your doing some awesome work and nearly convincing me to finally buy an m104 car to turbo haha. There may be a very special size that works but the problem you run into without a wastegate is that even if you got a turbo that magically hit the highest rpm and boost at your vehicle's max rpm it would have horrible drivability. It's not so much of it isn't possible just more that there is no reason to want that. Simply find a turbo that fits your desired size, boost/flow capabilities, and room to grow if you see turning the boost up in the future. If you want more responsiveness then aim for a more smaller turbo while still taking into consideration engine capacity and if you want more power then go bigger. Your current turbo is an excellent choice for your power goals. All it needs is that wastegate to keep rods in the block 👍
@JakeSublime

@@callumhennessy8617 Haha thats more like it! yeah i think you pretty much nailed it on the head there. Having a wastegate IS important, and IS a very good idea. In most circumstances, a turbo car is not raceable (at least) without one. I just wanted to get the car running and driving first. Plus, i did all the math to get the turbo the right size to not use a wastegate, so i was betting on that. However, the turbo i got had the 46mm inducer, instead of the 54mm inducer. All the math i did went out the window at that point haha. Its ok though, ill upgrade later to the 54mm, and maybe test the m104 without a wastegate again, just for fun and testing. The wastegate will remain on for the life of the car though. And glad youre enjoying my content! keep leaving your feedback, its valuable to me.

Amazing job you helped me on a few things I have the same engine thanks. I've gone manual cd009 it was alot of work new tunnel and drive shaft. Didn't your motor already have knock sensors?
@JakeSublime
2 жыл бұрын
Sensors, yes. However, for the new ECU to adjust timing and cut the engine and such, during detonation detection, the knock sensors have to connect to the new ECU. That said, the MaxxECU street doesnt have a built in knock "listener" circuit. You have to get an external knock "listener" that then talks easily to the Maxx. Then you set up your timing retards and ign cutout in the maxx software. More on this to come in the future, when i release some videos on tuning, as well as wiring up an engine (demo'd on the m104 obviously).

Haha yes i do know this, however i would need to replace the connecting rods and add a bottom end girdle, if i want the engine to last. My goal with this build is to show the strength and longevity of the stock m104, even after upping its power by 2.5x from factory. I want the engine to last 100k miles before anything internal needs adjusting/fixing. Maybe one day this engine will output 1k hp, but not any time soon.

@4:15 Upon watching this I'm not sure what transmission and valve body you have but Most Benzes of that year have second gear start unless I'm mistaken... The surge you are experiencing is the either wastgate pressure either via electronic or spring pressure or lack thereof ECU confused by interfering signals... The stock Trans for the m104 I believe is a 4 speed and its gearing is wonky especially if you have ASR and ABS there are other factors. I did not witness the build and will try to see if I can find it. Regardless without proper MBSTAR reconfiguration to ECU and TCU unless there is a standalone or piggybacked system... in conjunction with Dyno and wideband AFR sync she could continue to offer a plethora of issues... I'm gonna sub you and do some research to make sure I'm not talking out of my ass this was some time ago but I'm already loving the project and will search for more... @JakeSublime
2 жыл бұрын
@@nelocristof8599 Well, first off i am not fully educated on the 2jz, so i may get some 2jz facts wrong here but this is mostly accurate. The 2jz and the m104 have many variants. Some are better than others, such as the 2jz-gte being the best 2jz (iirc), and the m104.992 being the best m104 (iirc). Both have piston oil squirters, both have reinforced cast iron blocks, both have 7 reinforced crank main bearings, both have thrust washers, both can handle 1000+ HP on a stock block. All that said, The primary pro of having a 2jz is the extensive aftermarket available for it. On the other hand, I would argue the m104 is better in every other regard. The head flows better IMO, timing chain instead of belt (a 2jz weak point (tensioner)), not to mention finding a 2jz you can build and turbo would be WAY more expensive than finding an m104. The m104 is more common in the US than the 2jz. It is also not popular among ricers/tuners yet, so naturally it is much less expensive to get ahold of.

Rebuild probably cost me $500-$800. The turbo part cost me probably around $3000. So if youre planning this, maybe $4k USD is roughly a good budget mark. This is excluding the tools. I had to buy welders, a crane, a stand, bench tools, even tables and such for my garage. This was probably an additional $2000-$3000 USD.
