Shot in the chest is such a vague description though, which is why things get tricky. Did the bullet strike a rib, or not? Did hit the lungs? Did it hit the heart? Did it hit an artery? Did the bullet fragment, deform, or hold together? All these kinds of factors and more can affect whether a person lives or dies from a wound.
@mirkoson
3 жыл бұрын
@@hyrumcannon3789 Agreed. On the papers I only had the in and out wounds, so in my reconstruction there's a certain degree of assumption, I have to admit. And again, I'm far from being knowledgeable on the subject. I was only a computer animation student, at the time.

In general, tumbling and fragmentation would be considered a FAILURE in hunting ammo which is designed for maximum lethality. Tumbling and fragmentation result in erratic terminal performance. Only among varmint rounds is fragmentation considered desirable because little penetration is needed or wanted. Our military ammo is however hobbled by international conventions requiring that it not have expanding bullets. Tumbling is about the only mechanism they can use to transfer energy to the target. In light of our restrictions against expanding bullets, how is it that bullets designed to turn sideways in the body and/or fragment are acceptable?

I'm actually quite impressed by how this exercise of mine, which I did to help a friend at the University, happened to be my most viewed and active one. This guy was editing a video telling the story of some riot where a journalist was shot and killed while he was holding the camera (that's why his arm is raised). He passed me the autopsy papers and asked if I could reconstruct the event since I was studying 3D animation at that time... I guess weapons are very interesting for people. Funny how I don't really care, apart from when I play videogames.

Standard ball ammo (M193 5.56/.223) does fragment and according to some articles during the Vietnam War it made some exit holes that were way out of proportion of the bullet
@armynurseboy
6 жыл бұрын
By "regular", if you mean 55gr FMJ, it depends. The biggest factor of whether a 5.56mm round will fragment is velocity. If a 55gr bullet it is traveling at >2500fps it will reliably fragment. Once velocity starts to drop below that, fragmentation becomes spotty.
