Most of what is to the right, in the video, is the M1’s transmission, which is much larger than the Lycoming.

I played this audio track from my outside speakers on my fiberglass houseboat. The people in the harbor were convinced that I had installed turbines. With 1000 watts the whole harbor heard it, most thought it was hysterical. One guy keeps pestering me to do it again, but I don’t want to over do it. Yeah, I’m a practical joker.

I used to be a 19k, (tank crewman).. The driver had an 'oh shit' lever that I was told would disable the governor... I will regret to my dying day that I never pulled that damn thing. It just sat down there by my side, asking to be pulled... sigh :(

That lever went to the transmission and was to hopefully put it into gear in the event of a transmission failure in combat. It was disconnected on every tank I was on.

@@kylenoname8803 that might be true but the only issue he would have fitting it is the exhaust. This engine is pretty small for a 1500hp 3450lbf engine, it’s the transmission air intake system and exhaust that take up all the space but you could do an intake delete if you aren’t worried about sucking up roadkill

@@davidschick6951 There's a huge difference between extreme duty and abuse. Tactical gear and equipment (like the AGT 1500 here) are made for extreme duty. Not following the proper procedures in the operation of equipment is abuse. Military gear is designed to withstand extreme conditions, but will fail when abused. Anyone that abuses their equipment, deserves the outcome.

I'm not sure about gas turbines being used to propel a tank. A conventional (diesel) engine can get going in basically a couple of seconds. A gas turbine needs some time to spool up and get to operating temp I'd think. On the other hand including the turbine in the M1 tank design must have some practical advantages. Anybody can tell me what they'd be.

As per my knowledge: Advantages: 1) multi fuel 2) high frequency engine noise does not travel for long distance(kind of stealth) 3) starts very quickly in cold temperatures compared to diesel engine. 4)less parts to go wrong compared to a v 12 or opposed 12 engine. 5) high reliability and long lasting compared to diesel. Cons: Drinks fuel like a helicopter

It’s not exactly a ‘jet’ engine, it’s a turbo-shaft. That is, a turbine driving a shaft via a high reduction gear. The only aircraft that uses this type of engine are helicopters..

The leopard and the old M60 Patton get about 50% better fuel economy than the Abrams. And they run on ordinary turbodiesel engines, the same simple technology of your school bus.

(from WoT forum, still correct) Pros Diesel: -Longer range/better fuel economy -Faster start up Gas turbine: -Multi-fuel -lighter and more compact Cons Diesel: -Heavier and larger -Non multi-fuel Gas turbine: -shorter range/high fuel consumption -long start up Also gas turbine is relatively quieter, because it emits higher frequencies (- that get stuck in obstacles more easily, the sound waves don't go that far) which is great.

@@kennyhuskisson2684 Remember, the engine is surrounded by +70 tons of tank and very noisy tracks. The abrams does have a very quiet secondary generator that can run the tank with the turbine engine off.
