It is a solid little machine that takes the items that buyers have been comfortable with for years and adds on more memory and the M2. The Toyota Camry of the Mac line. Does its job without whining. For me, the reason that I like the 13" Pro, and have owned more of them over the years than any other form factor, is that it is small enough for my mobile needs yet powerful enough for when I do video, audio, or programming. And the battery lasts forever. I'm not after cutting edge. I want solid reliability. The 13" has always delivered in this respect.

This review confuses me. Let's say that Apple discontinued the 13" pro from the MacBook lineup. I suspect that many of the KZitem reviewers would be scolding Apple for having such a wide gap in the lineup between the $1200 MacBook Air and the $2000 MacBook Pro 14". I further contend that there would be these same reviewers suggesting that if Apple was "smart," they would fill the gap with a lower-priced Pro that had the M2 chip with an enclosure that could support the thermals for extended workflows. But KZitem is all about hot takes and being contrarian. The truth is, Apple makes the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro 13", and MacBook Pros 14" and 16". Why not give the consumers a choice and option to choose what works best for their needs and priorities? (Not for nothing, but as someone who regularly deals with tech consumers in the "real world," a similar design as a previous model can be a selling point.)

I actually prefer this design than having a notch. It is really distracting and annoying. Why can't apple just put the notch on top just like what lenovo did not on the screen. I don't know why people thinks that a laptop that has a notch looks futuristic and beautiful.

Looking forward to the benchmark comparison of M2 with 10 GPU cores in the Air and Pro. When both equipped with 10 GPU cores, they have no price difference. But the Air comes with with better hardware features which are relevant to the most consumers. Since Apple could saving a lot of money by keeping the old design in the Pro, does the Touch Bar and the fan justify for the prospective buyers to get the Pro over the Air? Or Apple keeps the Pro simply because knowingly there are diehard Touch Bar fans out there.

Thank you, for your excellent review. I agree with your comments that, it just seems like Apple, Inc. wants new money from people while still selling us outdated and older tech. Also, it appears someone at Apple ordered more 13-inch laptop parts then they have been able to sell. Yet, just adding a M-2 processor chip does not make this laptop a good value. It seems most reviews on this are really focussing on the superficial differences between the air and the pro and hyping those up rather than emphasising the sustained power benefits of the pro. If you spec up the m2 air to have 16gb, 10 gpu, amd the fast charger its 100aud more than the pro. The 14in is 1000aud more than that. So those looking for the power, proven performance, and classic design without spending $$$ they would be wise to grab a 13 pro if they are upgrading an older intel laptop.

If people buy it, who cares what random YT reviewers think? The ultimate test is whether it will sell and we need to wait for those metrics. Personally I am not sold on they new Air and instead would buy the MB Pro 13 if I did not have the M1 version already. You compare with the MB Pro 14 but I do not need the higher specs or having to pay the 50% extra for that, so not a clue why you mention that as the vast majority of these sold will be the base model and it is in fact the same price as the same spec MB Air, so on your take, why buy the MB Air then? I am glad Apple does not listen to the YT cabal and let the market decide when their devices have reached end of life. I do suspect that the next gen MB Pro 13 will be next cycle and that is clever by Apple as that means they can have another showcase with a revamped product rather than doing all at the same time leaving subsequent events lacklustre. Of course, Apple has thought about this where as YT reviewers are more simple in their understanding. The MB Pro 13 M2 is a solid device that has stood up to time with aplomb. It is not for those that want the new and shiny stuff or are driven by aesthetics rather than just a piece of kit to do your stuff on, so a choice for all those wanting a new Mac ultrabook?

As a business almost-ultrabook, the 14" pro is a truly fantastic computer. I disagree about the OS being an issue. I use a number of apps for work that run through Rosetta and/or Microsoft remote desktop and they perform better on my 14" pro than they do natively on the PC desktop with a 9th gen i7 I have at my office.

See it like this: It is a last model car with a new engine in it. It is still new and exciting though the design, which was top notch up to 6 years ago, may now seem less innovative. I fully understand that if you have hundreds of thousands of chassis ready it would make sense to fit a new engine in it and sell it as this year's model. Is it getting long in the tooth? Well yes, but it fills a gap. You make a very good point about the supply chain and it would behove people to think about this: Would you rather wait until the fall, or maybe even next year, for a MacBook Pro that fills the gap? Or would you rather have the MacBook Pro 13" disappear in favour of the more expensive 14" laptop or a fanless MacBook Air of almost 14"? It is hard to understand the many difficulties companies are facing in a world that runs towards a recession and high inflation rates. Apple has plenty of fish in the sea today, I think too many. It makes the choice of which machine to go for more difficult. On the other hand the MacBook Air does have the name of being the little Pro that could it has grown up and became a competitor. On the other hand, there are still plenty of other laptops from other makers if one is not invested in the Apple ecosystem of iCloud(+) and the likes.

As far as I can see, there is no reason for anyone to buy this laptop. The air is more portable, gets a new design, almost the same display and is a little less expensive. The 14" pro also gets a new design while not being noticeably less portable and without costing much more than a comparably spec'ed 13" Pro. The 14" is a downright great value because of it's truly exceptional display, extra ports, and extra capability for not much more money. I would have loved to see Apple replace this with a 14" MacBook using a thinner design than the 14" pro for about $400 less with a base configuration of 8GB of ram and 256GB SSD. That computer could also have Magsafe and an SD card slot but not include the promotion, miniLED display.

The MB Air base model has less GPU cores so the same spec Air is exactly the same price as the MB Pro 13. The other added features, not including a new design, are subjective, MagSafe, 1080p camera (we have the new iPhone feature for that), the chip, RAM are the same. The MB Pro has 2hrs more battery life and a fan so in hotter regions you can use a fan app to maintain max performance. Same brightness. I mean the Air has superficial advantages like smaller bezels, but this is something I do not care about. Not sure I agree that there is “no reason” but maybe I value performance, battery life and solid long term reliability (Air new design so we will have to see if any road bumps)?

@@andyH_England From my experience, the M1 in my 13" pro did not generate enough heat for the extra cooling ability to impact performance. If you are doing anything intensive enough to require active cooling, then the extra memory bandwidth, ram capacity, GPU cores, better display, and superior cooling in the 14" pro make buying it a no-brainer. You'd upgrade the RAM and SSD in the 13" model anyway so the cost difference is not significant. If you don't do anything intensive enough to need active cooling, then the air is still a better laptop. For an extra $300, the 14" pro is way more computer. It's why I ended up replacing my M1 13" pro with the 14" pro.

@@Piketom1 The problem with these reviews are that they are all trickery, the exact same applies to a MB Air if you upgrade it towards the MB Pro 14 spec, and then the Air is not worth buying for $300 less due to the better display, refresh rate and dual fans. So in one hand he is saying the MB Air is a better buy and the other the MB Pro 14 is a better buy, and that cannot be true as the Air would therefore be a bad choice. You have to only compare on base configs where the vast majority are sold (and where you get the discounted reseller deals). In the context of Pro 13 -v- new Air I do not see this wide chasm that the reviewer is making out. He also makes a big fuss of the MB Pro not having 120Hz, yet neither does the Air! I suspect the usual YT suspects have all aligned themselves to this conclusion as it will be a hit for clicks; dissing Apple products makes more money than being insightful.

@@andyH_England He is trying to play two sides as there are at least two groups of potential buyers for the 13" pro. On the one hand, there are those who want a "Pro" MacBook but don't need to upgrade the laptop. For those people, the Air is likely a better buy because of the new design and cheaper price. On the other hand, if you are upgrading the specs, then the price is close enough to the 14" pro that you might as well just spend the little bit extra and get the far superior computer. The addition benefits from the M1 Pro make it completely worth the up charge. There is one ace up the 13" pros sleeve that was only briefly touched on in the review and that is battery life. It is the best of Apple's lineup and likely the best in the entire notebook industry.

@@Piketom1 The second thing I do not get, that if you upgrade the specs then it is too close to the MB Pro 14 as that is the same issue with the MB Air M2. Again there would only be $300 difference. You cannot use that as a reason and then ignore the fact that it will also apply to the Air. It makes the argument extremely poor especially as I think 80% MB Pro 13 (or. Airs) sold are the base model, so why push that argument at all? Of course, they have an agenda and this adds to that. I hope in the MB Air review he also states that there is no point buying the Air if you upgrade as it is too close to the MB Pro 14 then? I doubt he will.

Kinda obvious Apple put this MBP out as a sacrificial lamb to steer customers towards the better and more sensible choices like M2 MBA and 14"MBP. They don't want you looking outside of Apple, all your choices are here. 👨🏻💻

Touch bar??? Are you @$#!ing kidding me?! I'm guessing that Apple is 'coasting' on the M2-13 cuz they over bought shitty old parts like the touch bar and they want to get rid of them but minimize losses.

Some people don't feel comfortable getting new designs. First, it looks like you are a mindless consumer, and second, you prevent being in the spotlight because of a new Apple design. Apple probably also wants to get as much out of a design as possible, which is economically and ecologically sensible.

Of course. And I personally don't like the new Apple designs. iPhones/Macbooks/iMacs look cheaper without roundings.

the answer for this product is simple. it’s macbook gov/mil/edu. it’s not for the consumers. in order to meet the RFP requirement, the product needs to be publicly available. also needs to be new enough to last yet old enough so it’s easy/cheap to maintain. think about the global gov/mil/edu balk purchase. aapl is making the right decision.
