14" is really the sweet spot/ largest I'd wanna travel with all the time. I owned an m2 air 8/512 for about 6 months before upgrading to the 18/512gb m3pro. I loved the size ad weight of the air and the biggest difference with the pro would be the overall weight. I do appreciate all of the other upgrades that come with the pro though.. especially the extra ports.. really everything on the right.. That extra usbC port really does come in handy; and active cooling. I like me a good display as much as the next tech guy but I honestly don't notice much of a difference between the two in this dept.. and I do a decent amount of photo editing and media consumption with my laptops. There's very little difference unless you've got them side by side and pay more attention to contrast and dimming zones than the actual content. Yes the MBP has better blacks but I really didn't see much beyond that and I was looking close when I still had both machines in front of me. 120hz is nice as well but I really don't find it as noticeable as I do on an iphone with pro-motion.

I made the switch from the 15" M2 Air to the 14" MBP M3 Pro last week, so this is all very fresh. My first thoughts were that the MBP feels heavier and chunkier, the trackpad much smaller, so side-by-side, I wasn't sure I was making the right choice. But the MBP has 18GB memory vs the Air's 8GB (both have 512SSDs), and I noticed the difference immediately when running Windows 11 in Parallels (the only speed issue I ever had). This was the main deciding factor, though the extra ports and the fact it fits into my backpack more easily definitely helped with the decision. Both are great, for sure.

I use base model M1 air. 8GB of RAM is merely fine for an average user… for now. It’s definitely not future proof. 6GB out of 8GB is pretty much always occupied with only a few apps open. If you do anything heavy that requires lots of RAM, or have many apps open in the background for example (multitasking), the memory swap significantly increases which means it’ll decrease the SSD’s lifespan faster. When the SSD dies, the laptop dies too. It is absurd to sell an 8GB RAM laptop as a base model in 2024, it should at least be 16GB. What can I say? Greedy Apple.

Buy the brand new fanless M3 MacBook Air or opt for the M3 MacBook Pro. Compare everything including designs, portability, displays, performance, speakers, SSDs, and thermals. Check the specs on screen to compare the 15-inch MacBook Air priced at $1,300 and the MacBook Pro starting at $1,600 but often on sale for $1,400. Consider the storage differences between the models before upgrading. Note that the 13-inch model is available for $1,100 with differences in GPU and screen size. Appreciate the thinness and portability of the MacBook Air compared to the larger MacBook Pro. Utilize the Thunderbolt ports on both devices for convenience. Consider the additional ports on the MacBook Pro, including HDMI and an SD card slot. Compare the speaker quality between the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. Assess the webcam quality and voice isolation mode on both devices. Understand the display differences, including brightness, refresh rate, and mini LED technology on the MacBook Pro. Explore noise reduction products like reusable earplugs for a peaceful experience. Analyze the SSD speeds, noting the significant difference in write speed between the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. Evaluate the CPU performance using Geekbench 6, showing similar scores for single and multicore performance on both devices. Consider the graphics performance and thermal behavior during stress tests, highlighting the MacBook Pro's better stability and performance under load. Assess the battery life, with the 15-inch MacBook Air outperforming the MacBook Pro despite a smaller battery size. Decide between the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro based on your priorities, with the MacBook Pro offering advantages in display, performance, and ports.

Question: How loud/quiet IS that fan on the Pro? I do voiceover recording and I need the machine to be quiet. I've been using a MacBook Air 2014, which DOES have the fan (and the far slower chipset), but the fan rarely switched on for recording, so I'm guessing the M3 chip could sleepwalk its way through recording without needing the fan. For post-processing, which includes cpu/graphics-intensive processing, I wouldn't care about noise. So would the Pro be the option where recording booth silence is an issue? I had really been settling on the fanless machine for that guaranteed silence, but you've made me reconsider.

@@TheAirnium Thanks! I appreciate the info! Good to know. I hope not to have the issue, as recording supposedly requires very little processing power, it's post-processing that is processing intensive and that is when I'm NOT recording, so the fan shouldn't be an issue. But really good to know it's that quiet. Thanks again!

this test is so irrelevant imho..compaing different specs, larger 15 air and no 13 air even though he has one shown at the beginning..

Considered replacing my m2 pro with a m3 air for traveling. But the better display and better sound now makes me thinking I am going to keep it and use my old 13 M1 air for travel.

I don't know why but I suddenly feels like apple must be able to allow system upgrade like the oltiems in a eleagan way that works for all users but they have chose not to which really made me feel sad. really wish apple could fix they last pcies for the Mac to become an amazing hardware for all users, not just the rich people. (I mean the ssd, not much to comment on the SoC design tho !^_^)

Why does real world testing never include office work? Screensharing on Teams or Zoom for prolonged periods while using chunky excel or PowerPoint? Would the air hold up sustained?

@@nnoook321 Nice. That's a really nice touch. It means that you have a fanless laptop for vast majority of your time with it.

Why are they in the US so much cheaper lmao. Here in Europe I cant find a macbook pro m3 under 1800, and thats the most basic one, for m3 macbook air the cheapest is 1250, and with 16 gb ram 1450

I personally don't care about the speakers in a laptop, since I always use headphones. Apple could cut the price and remove the speakers for all I care.

imo the base pro should be the 18/512 m3 pro. this one is just not it to me. I got the 15in air. and as someone who uses this machine daily it works the same. if you are needing a pro in that price range you can get an M2 Max pro that's almost twice as fast as the base m3 MacBook pro in graphical related tasks and still faster cpu multi core for the same price, I think the m3 pro is just an upsell for pro motion now. the ultimate laptop to me would be a 15in air with pro motion. 8gb of ram is just about useless too. my 16gb is using swap memory on maybe 20 safari tabs. Mac will always utilize as much ram as It can and imo 8 gb just isn't enough, I think the iPhones have that now, this is a laptop and its 2024 come on apple.
