I ordered and then canceled the nano texture. I bought the standard glass version and then Apple still sent the “cancelled” nano-texture one. So I got to use both for a few days. The nano won by a long shot. It’s amazing. The feel. The sound. The pen glides without getting stuck on the standard. I actually like the look of the grain on the screen, as it kind of gives it a slight look of paper grain. Definitely recommend.

I recommend trying to watch as many artist review videos as you can - get multiple opinions and pay attention to the details that are particular relevant to your needs. The general concensus (that I share as well) is that Nano is their favourite option compared to a matte screen protector. I do feel that Paperlike is the 1st recommendation I’d make however - since it’s very close and doesn’t require a hefty price increase for the 1 or 2TB options.

@@AdamDuffArt i spent a while at the apple store myself. It's the finger prints and oil; on the standard glass the pen catches onto the oils on the screen. The nanotextures allows the strokes to always be smooth and whenever you touch the screen with your palm, or do a gesture, it's always smooth. There's none of that jerky motion that comes with oil on glass. Your comparison to a Cintiq is a profound point. But... the price.

I returned the standard today and bought the nano for the very exact reasons. I have a Wacom Cintiq Pro 27 and I also tried my Apple Pencil Pro on it and thought... Hmm and I realized just like you that I love the etched glass on my wacom cintiq because my hands and fingers don't stick to it. It's not just the texture that I like, but the smooth motions allowed by the etched glass. It's not sticky like the standard glass and that has always bothered me about the iPad. So when this video went up... I knew I had also made a mistake. I now have the nano and I can confirm my initial findings which was that the nano is slicker than the standard glass but I realize that I should have taken into account the "sticky" factor of standard glass. The nano is the better choice for smooth fluid brush strokes that are not interrupted by the stickiness of standard glass. Now the nano does degrade image quality some. There is a noticable RGB sparkle (noise) effect due to the micro facets scattering the pixel's light. This very same thing happens on my Cintiq and it happens on matte/paper-like screen protectors. Its just what happens when light travels through a transparent surface with etching. Yes blacks are a little brighter, the standard is clearly optical... clearer. BUT in terms of drawing, the nano is nicer to draw on. Keep in mind that in the dark, nano is very similar to standard in terms of black levels, but the rgb sparkle is still there. You will see it clearly on your blank white canvas in your software of choice. Anyways. I'm happy with the nano. The standard is very nice too. There is no BEST, just better and both have trade offs. The nano is less "sticky" and allows you draw smoother, more intentioned brush strokes. I look forward to your follow up video Adam. I really do appreciate all you do here

The thing with the nano texture is that its locked behind the two most expensive variations of the ipad pro. Meaning if I wanted to use it I'd have to spend at minumum £2,000. I understand it's a professional level device and a complete gamechanger but I don't know why Apple doesn't allow it on their 256/512GB models. As much as I love the new look I'll stick with my 11" M1 pro for the time being.

Re barrel roll: having used the Wacom art pen (recently discontinued) for about ten years, I would say that its most useful feature was that I could take a heavily textured brush and have control over the angle of the texture. This allowed me to sculpt silhouettes and build out textured areas with a lot more control. Yes, you can use tilt or direction to rotate brush tips otherwise BUT there are tradeoffs. With tilt, you must TILT and it's not common that any artist wants to tilt a pencil 360 degrees, so at most you are able to rotate the brush tip about 40% of its full potential. With directional sensing, the brush must be moving before a direction is sensed, where as with roll, you can twist and tap and twist and tap. I see a lot of artist say they would not be interested in this feature, but I did not become aware of its potential until messing with it for a month or two and really getting into it. I've been surprised that Wacom never integrated the feature into standard pens, and that other developers just ignored it. Recently Wacom discontinued the pen stating "we can't get the parts anymore" and shortly after apple is implementing it. Probably not a coincidence. Seeing the writing on the wall, I forced myself to stop using the artist pen with roll and go back to my original. I don't want to give anyone the impression that you can't make art without it, but for me it unlocked a lot of potential that I didn't like giving up. Nano texture and barrel roll are really ending me towards this new iPad. My only hesitance is that I took the iPad plunge just over a month ago and the cost of the upgrade (because it's locked behind 1tb) is so so so much higher. Yikes. Thanks for your take on this from an art perspective!

It’s a conjecture since I have yet to experience it in person but that’s what it sounds like to me. I’ve had this larger display for almost two years and even with heavy use it has yet to feature any scratches - something I sincerely appreciate. For me my concern is how the colors looks washed out on the nano-texture compare to the OLED screen itself. I’m thinking of getting the OLED and then put on a magnetic screen protector so I can remove the screen protector while drawing and check for the color itself. I did try out both the nano-texture and OLED in the Apple Store. While the smooth feeling screen is nice and the glare reduction is nice too, I love how the colors popped out on the OLED screen itself, I compared the art demos side by side. Plus I’ve personally been writing/drawing on standard glass on my iPad for a long time (no screen protector) so I’ve gotten used to it. Another concern is that the nano-texture screen requires a special cloth for wiping. It makes me think if I try cleaning the nano-texture screen with my micro-fiber cloth I keep with me it may damage the screen unintentionally in case I lose the special cloth for cleaning the nano-texture screen. Plus, the OLED itself makes for a great media consumption machine and I’d love to be able to enjoying watching animations on the OLED itself with the magnetic screen protector off. Great video review and I’m glad you loved the nano-texture screen for drawing! 🎉

Great video and insights! The nano texture might up to specific artists and how they like the feel of the Apple Pencil on screen protectors (Paper Like, Rock Paper Pencil, Pen Mat, etc). I tried the nano texture in the Apple store for about 15-20 minutes comparing back and forth. While there is a subtle texture and grab to the Apple Pencil when drawing on the nano texture, it was very subtle. For me I felt that I liked the feel of screen protectors (Paper Like, Rock Papers Pencil, etc.) more and better for my drawing style than the nano texture. I will say though, the nano texture does feel nice when you glide your hand over it as mentioned in the video, and the visual quality was great!

Please get an Apple care plus and use the nano texture excessively and perhaps use it without caring much like placing it in a bag without case, cleaning with paper tissues or regular eyeglass cleaning cloths, or microfibre cloths.. Also simulating a harder strokes while drawing can be a good testing option to see if nano texture can hold up to strokes of mid heavy strength. This way perhaps we can see the peak point of screen texture where it gets worn out or scratched...

I worry about the nano textures longevity. It is based off the previous 6k Studio display they made no? The "marketing" emphasis Apple put on damage if not accurately caring for that particular nano texture screen was pretty strong. Yet with iPadPro they said nothing. They didn't even try to redefine the iPad's nano screen as stronger or now suited for drawing on.

I think it’s still too early to say if Nano texture is best for artists yet. I want to see how it holds up for at least the next couple of months first. If people don’t have any real issues with it after like 4 months, then I’d say it’s pretty worth it

Putting the nano-texture on 1TB and above tells me they didn't have illustrators in mind for it. I bet they could make an even better texture aimed at artists, and were they to do that I'd hope they make it available across the Pro and Air ranges no matter the storage option.

Wow... this is the best review I've seen. My fear with the nano textured glass is scratching the screen, especially given the mobile use of the device. I'd love to know more about how durable it is. And if we end up having to put on a screen protector, is it still worth getting? Or, would it be a detriment (worse visual clarity/etc.)?

I have an M1 12.9” iPad Pro, never felt that I needed to upgrade to the M2 version. With this M4 model and the new pencil I am finding myself wanting it badly, but I don’t necessarily believe I need it. What do you think? (I plan to get a nice Cintiq sometime in the near future) but I am just caught in between this surge of new tools and products
@AdamDuffArt

My answer would be - if you rely on Apple Pencil Hover (seeing the size and display of your cursor at the location of your pencil), then I’d say yes - M2 or newer is necessary. If you use your iPad for line art and paint-bucket coloring, then no - you definitely don’t need it. The M1 is a beast, even by today’s standards.

I went from the M1 to the M2 and noticed a pretty big hit on the battery life. The M2 was a more powerful but hungry processor. Glad they went with the M4 instead of M3 since the later one followed the same steps as the M2. M4 is the true next iteration in apple silicon I just wish the nano texture was an option for the base model, well despite my battery issues I still have a good machine with my M2 despite some line problems when using a screen protector. Will probably keep it until the next pro in 1.5-2 years from now. Btw have you had any issues with the grainy display these ipads are getting?

Hi Adam - as a complete beginner and long time saving for an iPad Pro I’m considering the 13” iPad Pro 2024 however my stumbling block is what size storage to get.. I don’t know how to work out what I’ll need for illustration animation and film making photography and music. I’m a beginner but want to use it for all these things. How do you approach storage as an artist? Also would you still recommend using a screen protector with the nano screen for art? Thanks

I'm gonna wait for someone to do a 1 month or 2 month down the line follow-up of whether or not the texture gets scratched. My cintiq has a big square patch of its most used area and I've seen how peoples screenless tablets get worn down. It doesnt affect anything while the screen is on but knowing a 3000 CAD ipad just has a big ass blemish on the middle would suck. I'd love to get away with not using matte screen protectors, they feel so gross to the touch and while using gestures. I was gonna go test one out in store but I'll probably just wait for follow up reviews since its a 2.5 hour drive. Theres nothing exciting enough to want to bother upgrading my ipad right away from a 2017 model. Plus most of the apps aren't updated anyway.

No worries, you can always put a screen protector on! I went to the Apple Store myself and I prefer the OLED screen itself because the colors just pops much better. The nano-texture does a good job with reducing glare, it does feel smooth while drawing, but the colors looks less sharp and washed out compared to OLED. I personally plan on getting the magnetic screen protector so I can draw on it and then remove the screen protector to view the colors, or be able to enjoy media on it and enjoy the OLED itself. I’ve also gotten used to drawing or writing on glass on my old 6th Gen iPad for a while so it’s just me. I just wanted to share my thoughts with you on the comment. Enjoy the OLED iPad, congrats ❤

@@paolaanimator thank you so much for the insightful comment! I used an ipad pro 2018 for years without any screen protector at all, so i somewhat got used to the ipad's glass surface as well. I might try a screen protector just to explore, but its by no means a requirement for me. I do very much value color accuracy in my art, so it is a great idea to get a magnetic one just so i can remove it every once in a while to fine tune the values. @@LuxArt33 You’re welcome, glad I can help out! I’m using a 6th Gen iPad Pro with a 1st Gen Apple Pencil. I still draw on it but I’ve been noticing some slow downs, and I don’t have much storage either. I’ll be working a job soon so I’ll be saving up and hoping I’ll eventually get not only the M4 iPad Pro but also the M4 Max MacBook Pro, I’m sure it will be around the corner. I hold on to my tech devices for 6+ years or more, I only upgrade when I’m starting to see slow downs. I want to do more with my art so it’s why I’m considering the M4 iPad Pro along with M4 Max MacBook Pro (when it comes out). Unfortunately, the Nano texture is kind of out of price range right now for me. So I just went with the base version. I'll cope with using a screen protector. I've wanted an iPad that lives bigger than 13 in. 16-In would be perfect for me. If this Nano was 16 in I would gladly spend like $4,000 on it or something. Ridiculous. But 13 in is too small so I'm not going to spend the extra for that. But the moment they come up with a 14 to 15 I will trade this one in and get that one

how much experimentening did you do tho. i dont like how inconsistent it is to use the 'squeeze', it just didnt work unless you really SQUEEZE the heck out of it, on screen buttons just work. id be cautious w the nano, they say you MUST use their special included cloth only. that it wears out faster & is more prone to dmg when i tried it in the store the diff in feel was super clear, UNLIKE THE IMAGE QUALITY...its so blurry almost like looking through a cloudy shower door, the light is quite diffuse; its probably great for ppl who must work in a highly illuminated area like outside or a superbright studio where you cannot turn down the lights....but for a darkish room at home? no way, it sucks.

And if you have a good Pc, you don't need an Ipad in your life as artist. This is my opinion, and yes i have an Ipad Pro 2020, and i can count in the fingers how many times i did paint on it.
