So I get how you can adjust fire to "walk" it where you want, how do you figure out where the first one is going to hit with mountainous terrain? I would assume with flat terrain, for a given elevation of the artillery barrel and known data that you could estimate pretty accurately where your round is going to hit, but with a mountain in front, how do you allow for that?
@DevilducV4
5 жыл бұрын
They use a sight on the gun to figure out in direct fire where it is hitting and adjust. Looks just like a rifle scope. This is just practice so doesn't matter. Crew is supposed to fire so many rounds to ensure everything works correctly and to maintain efficiency. In an indirect fire a forward observer or drone can walk the rounds onto target. We call it "calibration" and they will pick a tree or object and see how close it hits, then adjust the gun's digital fire control system to match. We can hit targets within 5 meters at up to 50km (30 miles) with an excalibur round. It is highly important we hit as close as we can especially if we are firing danger close to troops, which does happen. Convoy can be on the road being fired upon from the mountain next to them and we will walk rounds across the mountain to keep the convoy moving forward and demoralize the enemy into retreating.

In addition to the channel's comment to you, this will probably be more info than you wanted or expect, but here goes. There's map data with terrain and elevation that people have to collect. This can be done via traditional intelligence on the ground or through other methods like aircraft and even satellites. Weather is also a factor. There are guys who put themselves well in harms way to gather weather and related data on the daily in some places. All this "builds the battlefield" for whatever ops are going on. The impressive bit is that people compile all this and extract relevant info that eventually makes its way to gun lines, like the one you see here. The juice is worth the squeeze, as they say, because all this effort translates to effective target engagements so good guys come home and bad guys don't. It sounds like you have a good hold on how one might use all this info to estimate a shot on flat land -- it's trajectory. _In the simplest case,_ figuring out how to hit an elevated position is just a matter of knowing where along this trajectory path you will have similar elevation to your target. Barely an inconvenience. Use that point to direct your initial shots. In a way, you're aiming "behind the target," e.g. were the mountains absent, the shot would continue on the expected trajectory and into the flat ground beyond the mountain, but the mountain is in the way, so it goes boom on target instead. This is a great example of applied math. If you're really into nitty gritty answers there's a whole slew of stuff to work out when solving the problem you've posed. Note: in real life (outside of Mathland), the low angle/flatter trajectory that artillery batteries use in direct fire is more subject to go awry on impact and can be more unpredictable than the traditional/higher angle impact of artillery. If you've ever seen a bullet ricochet that's is usually why, rounds from small arms guns have a low angle when they hit the ground. So, same concept but with a round that is about 30 times the diameter and full of high explosive. Truly exciting stuff! This "skipping" is more commonly seen with naval guns due to the way they fire salvos at such low angles. In this video, they user notes that it's "low charge," and this reduces the velocity and range. They are probably trying to increase the angle as much as possible by using less powder on the shot. A faster shot means a flatter trajectory, which increases the risk of shots skipping. The lower velocity means a loftier trajectory, which is more desirable and safe.

According to my calculations, the distance to the target (hypotenuse, not flat distance), was 2.1 to 2.5 kilometers. How close is that to the actual distance?
@fakshen1973

Sound travels about 300 meters a second (back of the napkin calc). So if you start at the time of impact until you HEAR the explosion, you can get a rough idea of how far out the round landed. It also works for lightning. That was about... 8 second of time so about 2400 meters away.
@alfred.clement

𝑑 = (𝑣 * 𝑡) / 2 The target distance is approximately 1.55 miles (2.5 km) away from the cameraman. I'm pretty sure they've missed the mountain in the first video, it took an extra 7.11~ seconds to hear the explosion.
