Sharing another song from Khandan (1942) on the occasion of what would have been the 105th birthday of #ShamshadBegum
Shamshad Begum was born in #Lahore in 1919 and it was Master Ghulam Haider who first took her audition in 1931 and offered her an initial contract for twelve songs on radio and later introduced her to films with Yamla Jatt (1940), Khazanchi (1941), Zamindar (1942).
She also sung a few songs in Khandan (1942) mostly filmed on #Indian actress Manorma who later became famous for her villainous vampire roles. There are only 3 duets/chorus songs that I know of where #MadamNoorJehan and Shamshad Begum have sung together. One is presented here and the other two are from Mirza Sahiban (1947), Madam’s penultimate film before #partition
Interestingly in this scene in the film they are celebrating the birthday of Madam Noor Jehan’s character, Zeenat.
Song Title: Maar Gayi Re
Film: Khandan (1942)
Singers: Madam Noor Jehan, Shamshad Begum and Naseem Akhtar
Music: Master Ghulam Haider
Lyrics: Dr M. D. Taseer
Dr M. D. Taseer was an Urdu writer and poet. He was the father of 26th Governor of Punjab Salman Taseer who was assassinated by his own bodyguard in 2011 due to his criticism of the blasphemy laws in #Pakistan and him calling for the release and pardon of Asia Bibi. Dr Taseer’s wife, Christobel George, was the sister of Alys Faiz, wife of Faiz Ahmad Faiz.
