I had doubts about how to proceed, because I had two variables. First of all I work on a Mac Mini with M1 chip. There are a lot of programs that do not run with this configuration; and secondly, as the Mac Mini does not have a built-in microphone a friend gave me a headset with USB input and I thought it would not work as it marked both input and output. At first I had a hard time, but I didn't see another tutorial so complete and so well explained that without your help I wouldn't have been able to do it. Thank you very much!

Hi Walter. It still seems to record in silent, when I create the multi-output I only have a setting for MacBook Air speakers, not 'built-in' and even so it still seems to record in silent. In sound preferences it says there is no output for the selected device. I have 2020 MacBook Air :(

I had the same problem recording in QuickTime..But there is an options panel at the bottom where you have to select blackhole - it is set to none as default 🙄 took me ages to find the solution on the net.. very frustrating!

Yes, I think it would work but why not use the record facility in Skype, Zoom etc? Nevertheless I have done some tutorials recording video and audio and it does work.

Many thanks Walter. This is really helpful. However, I've hit a snag - when I started your Step 2, I am unable to select 'Built in Microphone' as it is not present. Any ideas what I need to do please? (I'm running Catalina)

Can you give details of the computer you are using? Does it have an internal microphone? If not then you are only going to see an entry when you plug in an external device.

@@classicaloracle Hi again. Its a Mac mini, which doesn't have a microphone input jack. I only need to QuickTime capture a lecture that is being streamed online. In which case, maybe I can proceed without using a built-in mic...?
@classicaloracle

@@gah6864 Yes, if you don't need to do a VoiceOver you can forget that option. If you did want to speak you could acquire a USB mic which would then show up in the preferences dialogue.

@@classicaloracle Brilliant, many thanks that makes sense. I was labouring under the misconception that built-in microphone related to the audio stream, and now I know it relates to driver associated with a physical mic plugged in. 😁

Hey Walter, I cannot get the bar to come up when I hit command shift 5 no matter what order I press. Do you think this is because of the Mac I’m using Or am I doing something wrong?

Hi Jenna, You need to have Mohave version of OS X but all Macs should do it. Have a look at Apple's page regarding this and check that you're doing everything correctly. Hope you have some luck! support.apple.com/en-us/HT208721

What I need is record while entirely muting myself. Do I still need blackhole? I tried and I can’t get it to work. It’s still recording silent
@dominiquevanryckeghem5020

You still need blackhole or some similar software. Where he checks the box on include the microphone, you would leave it unchecked because you don't want that mic input. Alternatively, create another multi-output device - a second one - that has it unchecked so that you have both if the occasion occurs where you do want to record from your mic. Think of it as routing audio streams and using/mixing them together or not. Also, in Quicktime, you need to make sure you have the option selected where the input is that multi-output device that you created in the above steps and that was named something like "quicktime ...". I followed the video instructions and added my changes to 'record while not picking up mic sounds on my end' which is what you're also looking to accomplish.

@@michaelneufeld8065 Hi Michael, I wonder if this is 'Big Sur'? If you hit on the settings icon on the top toolbar you should see a category for Sound. Click the arrow on the right and then choose 'Sound preferences'. When you look at the options there have a look under 'Type' and see if you have any marked 'Built-In'. You should see Internal Microphone and Internal Speakers. Accessing these settings has changed a little under Big Sur. Apologies if you've already tried this but I have to be sure! Hope this sorts it for you.
