Hi Tim. Love the vid, have watched it many many times. Thank you I have a 2.5yo Daddow in a private garden. Would you still suggest 50cm between whorls? Is it for ease of production or for tree health? Would also like to know when to remove lowest laterals (mine are not exactly ideal shape but the rest of the tree has decent structure) Thanks again

50cm is just a guide you will have to work with the options on your tree. You want some space between branches for light penetration and consequently production. Low lateral branches can be removed when they are getting in the way, once you take low branching off it can be difficult to get them back so don’t go cutting all side branches off up to head height. First laterals around knee-hip height on a young tree is good

Daddow has a lot of foliage. I would keep the gap to atleast 60 to 70 cms. Yes, and prune off the branches below knee height. as the tree matures, lop of the lower branches to 90 cms or a wee bit more.

Inwards, upwards, crossing over. Cut it. Aim for a triangular Christmas tree shape. What about MCT1 trees? Should they be trained to a central leader?

Karl Degraa I cant see why not. Another pruning style which is popular in high wind areas is a multiple headed tree. Simply prune back long whippy growth, some growers will even use a hedger. So trees do not become top heavy. I personally like a central leader if the variety allows it

I guess my farm in the Nambucca Valley is not considered to be a high wind area. However this year the westerly and southerly winds constantly whacked the trees we planted. I will try to train the trees to a central leader for all varieties as it makes sense.

How old is this tree from planting Tim? No flowers on it yet?
