As an auto mechanic for 35 years, I know about those patch jobs. I'm glad your customer didn't get "selective amnesia" when you told them it was a design flaw and there is no warranty as your repair is a temporary fix. Good work as always.

What an amazing repair job! My MacBook Pro 13" I5 (mid 2012) has a fault with the display. It's flickering a lot, sometimes shows a black blank screen, sometimes vertical bars, and sometimes shows all the graphics and text in green. This may be the display itself, but someone suggested it sounds like the GPU. I've decided to try and fix it myself instead of paying more than I bought this computer for, but if that doesn't work, I|d like to pay you to fix it for about £60, £35 or whatever the price may have increased to since this video was made. It's good to know that my MacBook Pro isn't finished!

I think that it was Louis that gave a trick that if you tap the chip and see changes on the screen that it's probably solder job. If there's no changes it's the chip. Heating it may "fix it" temporary but it will die eventually.

@TCRSCircuit

It's a widespread issue on this model. Has nothing to do with the MUX it's the bumps in the chip that crack
@Rick1984P
6 жыл бұрын
I think you're confusing this one for the 2011 model. The ones I've fixed with these symptoms were all mux problems. Resoldering the mux with leaded flux fixed them.
@TCRSCircuit
6 жыл бұрын
The solderballs on the MUX can crack but usually they still boot. I'm pretty sure the one in the video is a 2011 with a 820-2915 or 14 board. The 820-3330 (2012) usually will not fail in this was and given the fact that he heated right under the GPU and it worked, highly suggests it was a solder bump issue on the chip. But I'd take a MUX any day over a GPU so its always worth a shot.
@Rick1984P
6 жыл бұрын
Yes, agreed if it's a 2011. I don't repair them anyway (not worth the trouble/money). Reflow is only interesting if you're planning to disable the dGPU.
@Gemarica
6 жыл бұрын
Not... it will not be fixed by changing the solder with a lower melting point. Reballing is hardly ever necessary unless you have to buy a chip that has been used before. ALL models 2011-2013 have faulty GPU chips either AMD or NVIDIA.

Best thing your client should do to cool his machine is swap his HDD for a a SSD: the change in temperature is spectacular, especially if his disk is a 7200 rpm. And although the SSD write and read speeds are 10 times faster than the HDD, the temperature stays very low. I never hear the fan anymore, even while watching hi-res movies in a browser.
