MacDowell was an American composer of the late-romantic period. His most famous piece is the short "To a Wild Rose". However, he has written many more beautiful pieces, such as his Piano Concerto No. 2, and his set of 12 Etudes, of which this is the eighth.
This etude, originally named Schattentanz, was composed for the pianist to practice lightness and evenness in the fingers. The precise jumps in the left hand in the middle section is difficult for beginner pianists, and the main problem for me was keeping the light touch of the piece throughout. The piece is in a typical ternary form; going from the introduction to the middle section back to the introduction.
The pianist does a great job with keeping a quick, even tempo along with a light touch, unlike other performances of this piece where the pianists tend to play some sections too loud or too legato. The audio quality is not the best, however.
So, sit back and enjoy this short etude!
