Nice job Max, I used to use that trick a lot for trapaning, it's really interesting that by putting the relief in the centre of the cutting face with the intention of just plunging the horns in, 9 times out of 10, you can continue into a full contact plunge minus the chatter. It defies logic as you actually increase the cutting surface area when in full plunge! I used to do this with a 20mm wide stag major on a big old Herbert 8 and it would plunge all day long on power traverse. Swarf was a nightmare but it got the material out quick. Cheers, Jon

I've always found relieving a face with a recess can be a bit of a challenge, especially on a thin section. I like the idea of how you ground the tool to have the pressure focused on either side rather than a full tool width cut.

Hi Barry , i am holding off buying tooling as much as i can at the moment . I was going to get a VNMG when the hyd tracer is up & running on one of my other lathes . If i had lots of money , i would have done it with an indexable face grooving tool ! That's along time to wait for a motor , i get a local industrial electrical rewind shop to supply my ones . Cheers .

@@swanvalleymachineshop The lathe is new and still under warranty. Covid has messed up the supply chain and led to the extended delay. As a hobbyist I can wait. My other choice is to spend my own money to fix it. A rewind would cost about $1000 as far as I could determine. I couldn't find a replacement spec motor and anything close was $1800. The motor is weird, 240V 4-3 HP two speed dahlander motor. All other motors I find have a 2:1 ratio on the HP not 4:3. Closest I can find is 5-2.5 HP.

New to your channel. At 8:15 you mentioned a larger lathe you would run a larger rate, but not on a smaller lathe. I would venture to guess you don't have a mini lathe like smaller than a 8x18. I'm thinking at least a 10x20. What size do you have? I have a Grizzly G0602Z 10x22. Thanks.

Hi Russell . that lathe has a swing of 180mm over the cross slide & 925mm between centres . My other lathes are a 10K Southbend , 540mm x 2000mm JFMT and a Misal 24'' x 10 foot . The larger ones are in storage untill the new shop is finished . Cheers .

Yes bugger all is only half of a MIckey whisker, which is one tenth of a gnats nut. The metric equivalent of which is a poofteenth. Everyone knows that’s less than a bees d!ck.
