The lathe is so very versatile! All you have to do is look at the old school ones and all the attachments they had for them and you start to realize just what you could do with one tool.

Not true these days with the ultra new high end stuff (and of course it hasn't been true for a long time anyway, I know it's just a joke these days). They have now started to combine additive manufacturing to many high end machines - good luck replicating that on a lathe, when it'd be impossible on a 9 axis mill.

If you get this creative, you could do the same thing in reverse with a milling machine etc. Heck, with the right fixturing and tooling, you could make a round shaft on a shaper! Lol

I saw a guy boring the cylinders for his sons race bikes on a Colchester heavy tool lathe. The cutter was mounted on a shaft in the chuck secured on the other end by a dead center that he would polish and grease. The cylinder was positioned by a very stout jig with the shaft through it. Worked well, depends on how stout your setup is. I cant remember if he counter weighted the cutter. Im still learning though so dont take my word for it.

A man who I happen to think about as a mentor now possed this problem to myself when I was first learning lathe work. Ofcourse as a beginner it's something you dont usually think about, but now makes perfect sense. My mentor with a friend of his use to make hobbyist engines using just a lathe and a drill press. Now that takes some thinking to preform

He did explain why in a previous video, but I’m with you. At work I used a ward 8 and because we were on piece work used the emergency brake to stop the lathe, sort the next job and release the emergency brake to quickly start up again. Doing this I left the chuck key in as I pushed the bar into place when the brake let go. The chuck key hit the apron and split it open.

It's called thinking outside the box! Something the lathe department at the company I worked for didn't have . Because as a horizontal boring mill machinist I would constantly get jobs that could've been done more cost effective and efficiently on a lathe than on my mill. Then afterwards they would complain it was 15% over quote time and I would reply with yeah and it could've been completed 50% under quote time on a lathe. Silence discussion over and they walked away and never came back.
