The Spanish conquest of Peru was one of the most important campaigns in the Spanish colonization of the Americas. After years of preliminary exploration and military skirmishes, 168 Spanish soldiers under conquistador Francisco Pizarro, his brothers, and their native alliescaptured the Sapa Inca Atahualpa in the 1532 Battle of Cajamarca. It was the first step in a long campaign that took decades of fighting but ended in Spanish victory in 1572 and colonization of the region as the Viceroyalty of Peru. The conquest of the Inca Empire (called "Tahuantinsuyu"[2] or "Tawantinsuyu"[3] in Quechua, meaning "Realm of the Four Parts"),[4] led to spin-off campaigns into present-day Chile and Colombia, as well as expeditions towards the Amazon Basin.

An absolutely insane amount of rock went into building that place and all 'Inca' sites. The walls are like your standard blocks but under the ground and the terraces you're walking on are feet upon feet of larger rocks at the bottom followed by layers of progressively smaller and smaller rocks just under the sand and soil. Within those layers too are like little channels to direct water to other places so it doesn't erode the soil. The engineering that went into building that thing is just insane.

There is a "back door" into Agua Calientes that bypasses the costly train journey. From Cuzco or Ollantaytambo ride a collectivo to Santa Theresa, then another to Hydrolectica. From there it's an easy 6 mile walk along the railroad track to Aqua Callientes. Can be done in a day but an overnight in Santa Theresa, and a visit to the hot springs there, is recommended.

Great vlog! In the area that is supposed to close at 15:30 look at the difference in the precision cuts of the stone compared to stones earlier in video. It is widely thought that these precisely cut stone structures are from another civilization that was pre-inca. In other places the stones used for building are enormous. I'm happy to hear that you will be spending more time touring the area. This is awesome content!

Harald, you just saved this old guy all that huffing and puffing, climbing up there to show us Machu Picchu - and the at-least $500 to get there. Your history talk was gravy. Having watched tons of your VLOGs to all the fabulous world places, I've concluded the best parts of it all is "Harold," himself. Your choice of Italy as the planet's top spot is "spot" on - even though you make the best of the rest of them. Here's a salute to your realism and sincerity in everything you do.

One word...stunning! Your video was not too long, Harald. I could've watched footage of the site for hours! It was especially fun watching the parts where you got distracted because you were in such awe of the enormity and beauty of the area. I really felt like I was on the trek with you...impressive! Your history lesson was very informative and interesting. I look forward to part 2. It's too bad that you couldn't go exploring off the paths like you have in some of your castle vlogs. It would've been great to see more of this amazing place away from the tourists. I hope you found a way to get closer to Jeffrey's cousins for a visit 🤣 This is definitely one of my favourite vlogs of yours.
