S-D Trucks Series 7, Yep I got these guys out of order. I already dropped my video on Series 8, so I’m back tracking here, but I just found my set back in the warehouse and gotta drop a new video for you. Here is a link to go see my video on S-D Trucks Series 8: • SD Trucks Series 8 in ... .
SD Trucks series 7 is another All Mack Trucks set, just like Series 6 was. However, this one has the brand new Cement Mixer tooling instead of the dump truck.
Cement trucks are super hard to find in 64th scale, but they are so common on the highways. Cement trucks combine cement, aggregate and water to form concrete. Simple right? Well it takes plenty of power to mix those components in the drum.
One of the first concrete mixers was developed in 1900 by T.L. Smith and it exhibited the same basic construction with a tiltable conical drum with blades.
Basically, design hasn’t changed in 120 years. The only real change has been in how the mixers are powered and the size of the drums.
Ready Mix trucks, like the one in this set that we have been missing on our layouts for years, work similar to the small on-site mixer with a different design to the internal mixing blades. The interior of the drum is fitted with a spiral blade that mixes the aggregate and cement together known as charging by pushing the mixture deeper into the drum when rotated one direction. When the drum is rotated the other direction it forces the concrete out of the drum in a process known as discharging. Hence the name “Rear Discharge Mixer” Just like the one in the set.
This is S-D Trucks Series 7 by Greenlight. It's another set of three severe duty diecast trucks. It includes the second releases of the garbage truck and their Mack Anthem highway haul 64th scale trucks. However, it does include one, all new tooling, a cement mixer truck or concrete truck. Well, it's not a hundred percent new tooling. They already had the cab. They released the Mack Granite cab with a dump bed before on a tri-axle version. But now they've come up with a new tandem-axle chassis and they made it into a cement mixer, which is a piece that we have really been missing in our collections.
There was a GMC made by matchbox back in the seventies that was close to 1:64th scale. And there was an International PayStar that Ertl made back in the seventies and maybe into the early eighties. And that's really it for cement trucks in 1:64th scale. So now that new Greenlight Mack Granite cement mixer is a very nice addition to our collections.
Now let's get started with S-D Trucks Series 7 release A, which is the Mack Anthem highway long haul truck. They painted this one up for UPS, making the first branded release on the Mack Anthem. Greenlight also came out with this same exact cab with a trailer for ups. And I've already done a review on that. If you missed it, click here • Greenlight 1:64th Scal... and go back and watch it.
Now, this cab features really dark gray painted wheels, just like UPS runs. It has the traditional UPS Brown paint scheme with a UPS logo on the door. The cab includes a nicely detailed interior with a driver and passenger seat, a steering wheel, a dashboard, and even a bunk inside the sleeper. You can hardly see it through that back window, but it's there. It has mirrors on both sides that are painted black with the little turn indicator on them. It has some silver on them to make them look like they have mirrors pieces in them. The steps to climb up into the cab, the deck plate, the quarter fenders, the exhaust stack and the fuel tanks are all chrome-plated as is the bulldog that goes on the hood. Mack just doesn't make trucks without Mack Bulldog hood ornaments.
Now let's get to the new tooling in this set, which is a 2019 Mack Granite cement mixer truck. Isn't that nice. It's a tandem axle version. Been kind of nicer if they'd done a tri-axle Mack Granite cement mixer, but I'm not going to complain. We'll take what we can get.
Up last in this release is the second release of their Mack LR refuse truck or garbage truck or trash truck. This time they painted it blue. It features an all blue paint scheme, which would have been common for Republic Services or Allied Waste or even close enough for BFI. It would be easy to customize it into any of those 3 companies.
