They’re pretty similar in level. The biggest difference is how good tactically McDonald is. There are so many times he predicted the other guy’s move and got to the ball early to take back control and then there were times where the other guy was just scrambling and had no idea where McDonald was going. Mac really made a good player look like a chump
@Godot28
3 жыл бұрын
Technically MacDonald is way ahead. His hitting is effortless, where as Fawcett is muscling the ball of the time.
@juliansanderson839
3 жыл бұрын
Michael Taylor that observation doesn’t innately mean Jackie technique is (was) better, they hit the ball differently because they have different goals in mind. Fawcett ‘muscling’ the ball is intentional because he wants more power in his strokes, and he consistently hit harder than his opponent, if only slightly. Could he be more energy efficient? Yeah. But that’s not his primary intent, so having a form that fits that purpose wouldn’t make sense.
@Godot28
3 жыл бұрын
@@juliansanderson839 if you play tennis then you'll realise that you don't get more power by muscling or forcing the ball and brushing up the back of it like Fawcett, you get it through timing, technique and hitting the ball out in front (think Federer). I think you'll find that MacDonald is able to hit way harder than Fawcett when he really unleashes on that forehand of his. It's also how he's able to compete against top players like Dimitrov and Murray (do a search for highlights of these games). Fawcett would be blown off the court love and love against these guys.
@juliansanderson839
3 жыл бұрын
Michael Taylor fair point, having a fluid effortless swing is ONE way to hit with power, but not the only way. Most pros go with the smooth option bc they are playing tennis for 10+ hours a day and it’s beneficial for stamina. But it’s not the only way to get power. For comparison, look at Del Potro or Kyrgios (an example of an unorthodox forehand, not muscle forehand) I don’t doubt that in this match Mackey could hit the hardest forehand, I just believe and saw that consistently, Fawcett was hitting harder on that side thanks to his intentional stiff power generation. I think of it like the Bruce Lee method vs the mike tyson: one gets power through fluidity, the other through rigidness
