Everyone knows Tahoe winters for its skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing, but few know that winter is also when the fishing in Lake Tahoe is at its peak. The colder water temperatures of winter and early spring bring the fish closer to the lake’s surface and shoreline, giving anglers a great opportunity to hook massive trout.
The most sought-after species in the lake is the Mackinaw (also called Lake Trout) due to their large size, aggressive fight, and tasty meat. A boat provides the best access to these beautiful fish; however, they can occasionally be caught from the shore with the right technique and location.
I recently caught my first Mack measuring 26.5” and 5.3 lbs and had the camera running to prove it. I was even lucky enough to get a second one that morning that was just slightly smaller.
Fishing Lake Tahoe is uniquely challenging due to its extremely large size and depth, but it can be very rewarding with enough practice and patience. I highly recommend getting out there and giving it a try!
