Thanks for doing this! I have a 2014 27in iMac on Catalina 10.15.7 and am debating if I should update to Big Sur. Looks pretty similar to me in terms of performance. Did you try some 3D applications like TinkerCAD in the browser or gaming?

@@EPSTomcat11 I've been using it for 3D printing slicing with PrusaSlicer, and some OnShape CAD on the browser. All that stuff + Fusion 360 work just fine on both Catalina and Big Sur, no difference at all.

@@EPSTomcat11 It's the one with only 512MB VRAM (on the NVIDIA GPU), and 1024MB when using the integrated graphics. The RAM is only 4GB too haha. I don't use very heavy files on the CAD so it runs fine. SSD.

Finally, was waiting for the Catalina VS Big Sur video for two weeks and finally someone done it. Thank you so much. The only thing is left to do if finally to compare the battery life on Catalina 10.15.7 vs Big Sur 11.0.1. Out of all the humans on the planet, none has done it yet on KZitem, weird.

The real question is, why is your computer taking 45 seconds to start up with an SSD?? It takes mine no more than 18 seconds from power button press to login screen for Catalina on mid 2012 MacBook Pro. It’s even faster on earlier versions. Mavericks, for example, it’s nearly instant

@@jairomariduena5470 si lo actualize antes de ver este video incluso, el rendimiento prácticamente es el mismo. En si no es una actualización necesaria ya que Catalina tendrá soporte hasta 2022 , pero si quieres tener el nuevo look de Big Sur es una buena opción. Pero recomendaría que actualices un poco más adelante cuando Big Sur este más pulido o se pueda hacer una instalación limpia, pero por el momento todo va bien con la versión 11.0.1.

With all due respect, your boot times were abysmal. I would suggest you update this video when you get the unit in question repaired or the software configured correctly. The system should be booting with either Catalina/Big Sur in under 25 seconds.

Macbook pro late 2013 and early 2014 do have deep sleep issues when upgraded with nvme SSD. Has anyone tried to upgrade one of these macs to big sur and see if the deep sleep issues are fixed ?

Is this the Retina or non-Retina model from 2012? I'm still using the non-Retina one. However the hardest part for me will be to download a copy of Big Sur 11.0.1 since I can't directly on the App Store.

Easy, it is the OS that allows security protection that's still being updated by Apple! Catalina as of 2022 is probably going to be retired at the EOTY, as far as Apple is concerned it has reached its EOL. I'm not creating bootloaders and learning how to run OpenCore because I'm bored, Lol. Big Sur buys me easily another 20 months or so to save to buy something newer that is natively supported no geeekiness required.

Hi - something happened after installing one of the Beta builds on mine I think. Mine used to boot in around 17 seconds on the very first Beta and Catalina. After installing one of the beta builds it started booting in 45 seconds on any OS.

@@GameRoof1 Mine used to take ~ 180 secs to boot with my 1TB HDD. Upgrading to an SSD was the best upgrade I ever did on this laptop. Everything is just a matter of second now. You might wanna check that A1278 drive cable. I had to replace mine twice. I'm still hesitant to move to a M1 since, after the upgrade, my current laptop is better than ever.

The laptop in this video was later found to have a bad RAM slot, which may have affected performance. The laptop is going to be either repaired or swapped for a mid 2015 15 inch MacBook Pro, don't know which yet.

SSD, but there is some kind of bug that is delaying my boot times on both partitions at the moment. I will redo the boot times with 11.1 when it's out, with a full reinstall and reformat with 1 partition only.
