More than 500 threatened Macquarie Perch (Macquaria australasica) were released into the Ovens River near Wangaratta on 24 April 2015 as part of a project to secure the future viability of the species.
The project aims to create a self-sustaining population.
Historically, Macquarie Perch were an abundant species, along with the iconic Murray Cod and threatened Trout Cod in the lower and mid-Ovens River.
This is the second of a five-year reintroduction program that involves the direct translocation of adult fish from Lake Dartmouth and the stocking of fingerlings raised at the Snobs Creek hatchery.
The long-term goal is to re-establish a viable Macquarie Perch population, improve the species’ conservation status and create a sustainable fishery for recreational anglers.
A second 2015 release was held at Gapsted on 1 May 2015.
This translocation project is jointly funded by the Victorian Government and the Australian Government in collaboration with the North East Catchment Management Authority (NECMA) and DELWP’s Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Research.
