Gimp is awesome! I love how you can google how do i do x + gimp and will immediately find 20 replies on it. It has a learning curve but once you learn how to do things with it I find I like how simple the design is.

Your Mac stitch program should be able to do this to. I use Winstitch and I can select the area I want to keep and delet the background.

I love this video! im having a bit of a problem when inserting the image into macstitch however. the pattern includes the space where I removed the background in gimp, and turns it all into white stitches. is this supposed to happen?

Yes that is pretty common with importing a transparent image. What I do to fix that is change my fabric background to a very different color like bright blue and use the eye dropper tool to select the white(s) in the background. I then click on remove thread from palette under the palette menu. If you aren’t sure if this color is in your pattern elsewhere you can click on highlight stitches of active thread. Usually there is only 1 color white in the background but sometimes there are other colors close to the subject, so changing the background to a bright color makes that easier to spot and correct. Hope that helps!
