1996 my brother and I were allowed to stay up late to watch the Colorado Avalanche win the Stanley Cup, after which we were put to bed. Then maybe ten minutes later my dad bursts in and says "you guys have to come see this!" The road warrior was on tv and he showed us this scene after which we went back to bed. The next day he went out and bought the movie on VHS for us. This is top 5 movies of all time for me, thanks dad.

The shift from the opening narration/fade to black/pull out of the blower scoop ]SSHHEEAAHH[ It gives me an endorphin rush even now, having seen it (truly) !countless! times since I am just a little older than the first Mad Max. An absolute favorite memory is of my eldest brother taking I and our middle brother to see Thunder Dome at the theater. It also has a Nut-worthy opening. So does Fury Road but only because the Ford Falcon mysteriously reappears. Briefly.

I saw the Road Warrior for the first time at a Drive In when it first came out. 1980? Anyhow I had never even HEARD of Mad Max, let alone seen the movie. But the Road Warrior blew my socks off. That's why early cars like model Ts (2.9L 20HP) got such low HP from quite large engines, they were designed to run on fuel with bits of twigs in it. Imagine going down from some 95 octane to 50. You'd need a new type of engine to make it run without the thing "knocking" itself to pieces in a few yards.

Some years back at a comic con I had the pleasure of meeting Vernon Wells or Wez himself. He was genuinely nice and appreciative of all the questions we all had for him. When I mentioned the film innerspace he took a deep breath and said “ all anyone ever asks me about is the road warrior, finally someone understands I did work on othef films”. I think he was impressed that someone else knew about innerspace. He was happy to answer questions about everything including road warrior however. FYI in Innerspace he was Mr. Igoe who went into Martin short to kill Tuck and steal his submersible. As it turned out Tuck ( played by Dennis Quaid) was not so easy to kill and when Mr Igoe grabbed hold of his sub he dropped him into stomach acid. Again Mr Wells talked at length about that death scene by starting with, “ That’s one of my better death scenes “

What always left me feeling a little uneasy about this opening scene is the very end when he’s scavenged all the fuel and supplies he could find and you see him drive off into the unknown. You hear what sounds like an ominous dark like wind whistling and the reddish hue of the sky as he leaves. Gives a good dark tone as you wonder where he’s going and what else will he find out in that desolate void.
