Whether it was a desperate retort or not it definitely hit Don right where he's weakest. He doesn't value himself and actually has pretty low self esteem. He's ashamed of what happened in Korea, ashamed he stole a dead man's identity, I even think he doesn't really value what he does for a living deep down. Couple this with his good looks and he probably questions whether he has any real talent or value or at all and whether he really has made it as far as he has on his outward appearance to the world.

@@ronoccc Makes a very good point. Absolutely right. Mathis is hardly a wordsmith and it doesn't matter that it was a desperate or shallow insult from him. Doesn't matter that it was Johnny saying it either really, it would have the same punch coming from a stranger or someone else at SCDP. Just think back to The Gypsy and the Hobo (S:3 E:11) when the kids are trick or treating and the gentleman asks don "Who are you suppose to be?" he didn't doesn't know Don, it's an innocuous question I've said it to parents on Halloween myself but you can see it knock the wind right out of Don. I've seen people comment on how this hits Don in his biggest insecurity, but I don't think anyone's commented on how what Don says to Mathis is itself projection. "Take responsibility for your failure. That account was handed to you and you made nothing of it, because you have no character." Don says a line in the finale which mirrors this nicely. "I took a man's name...and made nothing of it." He says occasional lines throughout the show which reinforce this. A part of himself, deep down, fully agrees with Mathis. He thinks he's wasted the new life he was handed, that what he does has all been an utter failure. I think it might not be even fully capturing it to say it's an insecurity of his. Pete Campbell's worry about not fitting in the way he is "supposed to" is an insecurity that he surmounts. I think with Don, this is something deeper, something he accepts as truth and tries to mask, rather than something he feels like he has to overcome.

Nah. You’re just attempting to continue the Don worship. I like the show. I even like Don. But Don is a massive POS. I could hang out with Don man to man. But remember, he only respects two things, success and overt masculinity. If you don’t have either he’d be a subtle bully to you. Look, I used to model. Good looking people love to fool themselves and tell themselves that their success is form hard work and deserving it. The reality is, I used to have female bosses offering me promotions just for smiling. Don knows he’s good looking, but like most people, his ego demands that he feels like he deserves success due to merit, Now Don has some merit. But his merit is not always consistent. He’s not as good as he thinks he is. He thinks he’s the Mozart of the advertising world. The reality is, he only got the job because he’s tall and attractive. Otherwise sterling wouldn’t have respected him enough to let him in the building on his “first day”. He would have laughed a guy lake Mathias out the door. Now Mathis is a loser. But he recognises he’s a loser. Whilst he’s frustrated, he’s also calling out Don’s hypocrisy. Should he do it? Practically no. Philosophically, yes. Why? Because the power structures that hurt guys like Mathias flourish in shame and domination. If every guy like Mathis had the guts to look it in the eye and call things as they are, the Mathis’ in the world wouldn’t have it so bad and the Don’s wouldn’t have it so easy. But individually people don’t like obtuseness. So individually each Mathias of the world is better tucking their tail between their legs and getting on with life.

Mathis was right. Don is not totally devoid of character, but he's oblivious to how much his looks play a part in his charisma. Mathis asks Don to be there to smooth things over but insists Mathis should do it himself. Fair play. But then Don just goes into stories of times he totally said the coolest thing ever and everyone clapped. Because Don could never do something genuine, it always has to be some Cool Guy maneuver. And he refuses to explain why apologizing is not an option, which is what Mathis wanted to do. Mathis probably should have gone with the soap trick, but I think the point is that Don can't drop the Cool Guy facade for a second, even when he's helping someone who doesn't play pretend 24/7 and is actually genuine. Even that soap trick is unnecessary Cool Guy antics, but it was the better option.

On the surface it looks that way but in reality both Mathis and Cutler completely fell for Don's "act" until they saw it up close over a long period, which was also the period of Don's personal decline. From being a salesman myself all I can say is that every salesman / anyone in business (ironically) has to bring something genuine about themselves for clients. Use what you see as your weaknesses as strengths and try to understand how the person you're talking to feels around you. Where Mathis failed is that he tried to be someone else without even knowing his client, or knowing what the client likes about them as he didn't try to get to know the client at all - instead he tried to imitate someone else. If you do that, you'll fail eventually one way or another I think, if you're not genuine you'll become exhausted from play-acting whatever you think the perfect businessman is. Advice from an experienced colleague is fine, but only if you can interpret it in a way that works for you and who you are. Trying to be something or someone else always ends badly. Look at Don in this series. Perfect example. The only place he's actually genuine is his work, he can find joy in fantasies he creates for products. Unfortunately, he's made that his entire life because of a false identity. So he can't really find happiness anywhere else in life BUT the fantasies he creates (like the next attractive woman that comes into his life, and when he gets bored or the intimacy becomes frightening and could shatter his illusion, he moves on to another. His relationship with Peggy (and his false wife) also demonstrates this, he has a good conscience underneath the shell he's made to protect himself, and can only show it in his work or in secret getaways rather than actually expressing himself honestly to people, which messes him up on the inside and leads to an outburst in the final seasons, where he tells a bunch of potential clients about the abuse he suffered as a child - a bunch of near enough strangers instead of actual people he's intimate with. Props to Mad Men for being an amazing show, with amazing writing.

But Don basically told him to „call them the assholes“, and he obviously meant it not literally and left room for Matthis to build on that premise and not just insult them. Matthis, who yes isn‘t as good looking, but also completely lacks the communication skills, failed and isn‘t able to self reflect.

The men in this room reflect two sides of the same coin: The ones who have it easy and tell others they just don't try hard enough - and the ones who have it hard and far too often don't try hard enough making excuses. The first type knows that what drives their success is willpower, but they don't like to think about it - because they would have to look too closely at the place that willpower is coming from. They don't wanna understand their hunger - they just wanna satiate it. The second type too often settles for "having tried" and rationalising their failure. They might learn a lot about themselves and the world, but their knowledge will always lack the final test.

Let's break this scene down: - Mathis says guys like Don don't have to apologize for a joke in poor taste. But Don says guys "like him" know how to tell such jokes. Don means men with self-confidence. - Mathis says Roger tells that same joke but that the client was enamored of Don. Don finds this comment ridiculous and repugnant. Off scene, Roger likely tried to console Mathis by implying that Don's looks excuse him of poor-taste jokes. Roger was also deflecting the attention away from himself since his own position in the company and in society usually excuses him from the same kind of jokes. I mean, Roger did sing in blackface and "got away with it." - Don tells Mathis to take account for his own failures and that blaming Don was a sign of no character. Blaming someone who wasn't actively involved makes Mathis appear to have poor character. To Don, Mathis appears to not have the confidence to say such jokes - though strangely he displays enough confidence to accuse Don directly. - Mathis tells Don that his attractiveness is his ticket past certain societal rules. Don looks at him quizzically because he believes it's all in his self confidence. If Don had truly believed he was attractive enough to get away with bad things, his likely expression would have been to smile knowingly. - Don realizes Mathis is adamant on the belief that attractiveness = confidence = success and decides that the argument is not worth maintaining - as well as Mathis' employment. Because, one bad apple and all that.

Mathis is right, and wrong. Don worked to get where he is. He learned to be dominant and masculine, and his sheer conviction leads him to win over clients and make good deals based on top tier negotiation skills. Remember Dick Whitman? And how not-confident he was? Yes, being handsome has its privillages and hot-spots, but it gets your foot in the door. In their business, handsome is not nearly enough. Unless you have confidence and sheer will and determination, you won't survive. Mathis hurt Don because Don knows he's a facade, a creation, and Don is who Dick wants to be, but isn't. That's why the series end is an 'coming together' point for Dick and Don, where he accepts both identities into his persona.

One of the few times in this show, that someone essentially called Don out for being the scumbag that he is. Really wish there'd been a scene where it happened publicly and he got put in his place for all the chaos he was directly responsible for, the amount he spent coasting by on his bravado, and the total lack of moral fiber he exhibits in almost every aspect of his life. I love and hate this show at the same time. He knows how to carry himself to clients so he can sell them his ideas. You can be handsome, but if you still can’t perform at a high level in this industry, you’re not getting anywhere near Don. You see Pete Campbell making excuses? Mathis, on the other hand, probably sucks at his job. The only person he has to blame for losing is himself. He can take this experience and learn something valuable from it to apply to future clients, but he decided to blame Don because it was easier for him. Don gave you genuine advice. Mathis for sure fucked up. People eventually came to realise how useless he was: but it took time. It's sad but people are superficial and will always wanna hang out with the physically attractive/dominating person. The same way many women would label a guy a creep for trying to seduce them, but had the same bloke been 5 inches taller, with blue eyes, nice hair etc their reactions would be different Mathis' mistake here was trying to imitate Don, (as well as lacking self confidence) knowing he's got neither the looks, or actual talent to go with it, he should have played it safe and apologized. Only people like Don can get away with anything. The rest of us should make up for what we lack with hard work, wit and persistance.
