Mad Season is so underrated…. Layne here is brilliant and the most lyrics in song here are written by him. I recommend Mad Season -Wake up live performance, this song Layne wrote about his adiction and it’s so hertbreaking looking him singing this in live … he gave it all … RIP angry angel you will never be forgotten.. ❤️

Totally agree with ur comment 😢I miss him deeply. He sang from his ❤& true feelings. I believe he missed Demri so much he grief took him deeper into his addiction. When we r broken we believe at times death is a way of healing our pain. 😢😢😢 Miss Layne very much ❤

This song is about heroin addiction. To get a better context of the lyrics, do a google search of slang words for heroin and heroin use, and you will start to see a pattern, especially of what "river" (veins) means in light of what it means to Earth (life).

My favourite songs from this album are 'Wake Up' & 'Long Gone Day' w/Mark Lanegan (who passed in 2022). Check those out if you have a chance, the live show at The Moore 1995. The whole show is great.
@avestuart

Have you read Lanegan's memoir which was published in 2020? He talks about working on that song with Staley, and how the members of Mad Season listed him as a fully credited songwriter on the entire album. Lanegan also had a bad addiction problem and just when he was at his lowest financially, a royalty check arrived from the sales of this album and he blew it on heroin. He also talks about Staley essentially moving into his apartment and they ran a crack-dealing business in the First Hill neiighborhood.

Layne recorded this album while Alice In Chains was temporarily broken up. The band kind of imploded when he unfortunately relapsed again. So he came together with this other group, and his singing does sound incredible on that record. He was also very satisfied with the finished album.

The whole album is great but Long Gone Day and Wake up are my favorites. There is Temple of the Dog too if you want to hear another supergroup from these 90s Seattle bands. Actually there is a new one right now too called 3rd Secret with Krist the bass player from Nirvana, Kim the guitar player from Soundgarden and the drummer from both Soundgarden/Pearl Jam. There is some really good modern Alice in Chains too since they got back together with William Duvall replacing Layne like Phantom Limb and Check my Brain. There is also Velvet Revolver which has Scott Weiland from Stone Temple Pilots on vocals and the rest of the band is basically Guns and Roses and there is Audioslave that has Chris Cornell on vocals and the rest of the band is from Rage Against the Machine.

3:48 🤣🤣🤣 The lyrics seem weird with no context but how I see it is, if we choose to "pull off our skin and swim to shore", we can "grow a beautiful shell for all to see". The shell is our Inner self finally revealed. The true us. The us that lay waiting beneath the skin of deceit. The song is basically about his life that led him into his heroin abuse, and he's choosing to live a happy life and be himself rather than be a fake version to please others❤️

Layne wrote the lyrics to the entire album with the exception of one song where he had help from his best friend Mark Lanegan. You must listen to WAKE UP from this Album. It's also another great one and like a plea to himself to get straight. Also from AIC I recommend 'AGAIN' where Layne looks like a suited up superstar in the video. You'll like it. And LIVE AT THE MOORE 'It aint like that'
