Great band, fantastic song. I think they're really underrated as songwriters. Most people see them as wacky clowns but a lot of their songs contained social commentary on issues such as (in this case) the homeless, depression (grey day), animal experiments (tomorrow's dream) sexual abuse (razor blade alley), the americanization of the western world (uncle sam), the falklands war/thatcherism (blue skinned beast), etc. etc.

Agree it's their roots, as I said, their sound is much more than ska, this song cannot be described as ska. Nor most of their albums. Nobody was skanking around the room to the Rise & Fall, Keep Moving, Mad Not Mad albums, we were listening to them and marveling at the song writing.

Madness were renowned for meaningful lyrics and fantastic musical scores. Everything that they did hit a chord, not just the late - 70s/80's material, but the later songs such as Lovestruck and Johnny the Horse........these reflected real situations. More than creative, absolutely inspirational writing, yet, at the time when we were but mere teenagers, of for that matter younger, we bought the vinyl for the songs.....strange we never really understood at that time the greater meaning in the music that was Madness. Must admit, to this day, I will happily enjoy their works!!

It seems a regular occurrence that I listen to a Madness song and think, in the moment, what a great tune, this might be my favorite, only to go through the same sequence later with another song. But, this one might truly be my favorite. The lyrics, vocals, tasteful sax parts and piano accents just come together so well. It's a good problem to have that it is so difficult to pick a favorite. I've not experienced that with any other band.

Possibly their best song, a Suggs penned concerto, the final release off Stiff and marking the beginning of the end. It wasn't received well by the single buying audience who preferred the nutty Keystone Cops image of the earlier days. But this is without doubt Madness at their very best musically.

@mikekaraoke Massively underwhelming chart performance for a Madness single. Was always going to be top 40 because the fan base would go out and buy any Madness release regardless. Great song but not a commercial success, and neither was the album particularly. The band was in decline at this point.

Yea shame Barson had left then but then came back to do the music video for it but then came back in 1986 as you know! Same with the Michael Caine video-The video took longer to complete than usual, due to being shot on 35 mm film as opposed to 16 mm. As a result, Mike Barson is absent for much of the video(as you know) as he had a plane to catch, and could not stay for the whole filming session All because he went to live back in Holland with his then gf.

The whole ska thing is rather naff and tedious. Granted, madness did move away from the tag by the end of 1980. But to keep revisiting it in 2019 is a tad tiresome. I agree madness are wrongfully classified as a ska band.
