This song has everything. It is a complete and utter work of art. I remember hearing a documentary about producing songs, I think it was on Radio 2, and the guy who worked on this was talking about it, breaking the song down and explaining what they were was trying to achieve. He was obviously extremely proud of how it turned out...thx for posting

madness were a pop singles band, rather than a band for doing albums. 'one better day' and 'yesterday's men' weren't big chart hits, as far as I know, but actually they're the ones that stand out most for me: two tunes that could be hits in any genre: top notch music.

This was never an official video by Stiff Records - After going back to the original choice of 'One Better Day' as a single rather than the slightly more commercial 'Victoria Gardens', Dave Robinson chose to not make a video. So Madness got Nigel Dick to come up with one instead. There are rumours of an aborted video of 'Victoria Gardens'.... 'One Better Day' is one of their best tracks, but from a commercial point of view, they were moving too fast for most of their audience. Pity!

Yeah in the early 'nutty' days of skinheads, Doc Martins, bleeched jeans and denim jackets was when I first heard them :) The first days they were born :) I remember them when I was .... 17 (24 years ago) running around Dundee City Square with a fake tree log (of all things)! But it does depend when you furst heard and 'got into' them :) They had to change with the times. But equally if they returned to the real ska days of the late 70's / early 80's they would still be fully accepted :)

i use to go there to the resettlement team in the basement late '80's i fear those who are still homeless while the London assembly take the non ring-fenced cash to use on other areas. Its a disgrace that the cash for the Olympics could have restarted public housing probably sufficient for all those wanting a roof could have one.

Madness are timeless, this is as good today as it was upon release. This is true of all Madness music. These lads were my youth, they were my becoming a teenager, first girlfreind/breakup before football and after football. I took my Madness with me when i served my country and now my girls even request One step Beyond for me at parties and such. Outstanding.

No worries. Listen to Yesterdays Men and you'll realise wot a class act Madness are, however the Dammers from old I know from our Uni days would neva pigeon hole music and you're observations are correct. Listen to tube station fron Jaymod69 about to be released by Dammers label absolute classic enjoy urself it's beta than u think

Don't get boffed down with the label being the reason. I know Jerry Dammers from old who was the Specials driving force and he tells me it wasn't a label that forced any musical influence in fact the opposite. Madness commercial success saw them branch out not the label, they were never really a SKA band believe me.

I think it depends on your age as to which period you liked best .... being 41 I was there from day 1 and the real ska in the early days was the dogs :) Loved it, When the likes of Ghost Train came out the amount of ribbing I took! but they have mellowed with age and are still a very complete and brilliant sound :)

amazing to see how britains musicians are trying so hard to be like the americans lately. what a shame, for so long they made the best music there was and is, and today the best britain has is cheryl cole and lily allen. how sad.

It's one of those tracks where every instrument counts. This is superbly arranged with a prominent piano, sax and a wonderful pay off from the string section. A melancholy start is given an uplifting beat at the end. This track is so good that i'm not ashamed to say it nearly has me filling up such is the emotion in the song and it's lyrics.
