Madonna said of her chilhood : "The Beatles were there but I was more eager about The Supremes. I was really into girl groups."
In the 1960s and 1970s, the city of Detroit bore witness to the rise of Motown, a music scene that would eventually conquer the globe. Madonna, hailing from the suburbs of Pontiac and Rochester Hills, and Diana Ross, who grew up in various parts of Detroit, including the projects, were both deeply influenced by this musical movement .
Diana Ross, as the leading lady of the immensely popular girl group The Supremes, reigned supreme in the Motown universe and all around the 5 Continents .
Madonna, during the early stages of her career, openly acknowledged Motown's impact on her work, singling out Diana Ross as a " significant source of inspiration ".
Fast forward to the 1990s, when Madonna had become a global megastar. Interestingly, Diana Ross had earned ( 1993 ) the title of the "most successful female performer of all time' " in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Their paths had crossed, and during a 1999 appearance on "TFI Friday" with host Chris Evans, Diana's Guinness accolade led to a lighthearted remark about Madonna.
Chris quipped, "I bet Madonna hates you, doesn't she?"
To which Diana, breaking into laughter, replied : "She might!"
She went on to acknowledge her personal acquaintance with Madonna, diplomatically avoiding
any direct rivalry.
Chris suggested that Madonna was a "flash in the pan" compared to Diana, but the legendary Motown icon responded graciously, saying:
" No, she's been around. She's got some legs, yeah? "
Come back to the video sequence :
In 1987 Diana Ross hosted the American Music Awards and Madonna won an AMA for Favotite Pop/Rock Video Female. At the end of the show, Diana Ross (as well as Whitney Houston), invited Madonna to go on stage to sing " That's what friends are for ".
In 1991, Madonna went to the Paris fashion shows and watched Diana Ross modeling for the designer Thierry Mugler: that was the first time that a singer modeled.
( Then , In 1997, Diana Ross flaring in Rome for Gay Mattiolo, in 2019 for Christian Dior, in 2023 for Dolce & Gabbana, in 2024 Diana Ross was the " Muse " for Saint Laurent ).
In 1999, in London, Diana Ross is interviewed on "TFI Friday" with host Chris Evans, who says that Diana Ross is in the Book of World Records as "the most successful female singer of all time" and tells her, joking, that "Madonna hates her" because Diana Ross kept taking away Madonna the scepter in the Book of World Records ( see above ).
In 2003 , in an interview to Graham Norton, Diana Ross said :
" Madonna was rude with my children when they asked for an autograph " !
In 2019, in a BBC interview with Graham Norton, Madonna illustrates some photos taken many years earlier (in one of which is with Diana Ross and Nile Rogers) with artists she deems "amazing "
