One of the most significant assets of the Assamese culture is the instrument “Dhol”. Various varieties of the Dhol are present among different ethnic groups of Assam. One such prominent variety is the “Bihu Dhol” or “Ojah Dhol”. The person who plays the Bihu Dhol is known as “Ojah”.
Many famous and respected Ojhas have passed away from the lands of Assam but there is still one man (Ojah) amongst us who developed one of the 24 styles of playing this lively instrument, called the “Gagana Haath” and who holds the knowledge and protects the old cultural ways of playing this amazing instrument, is the great 85-year-old "HORUPAI DAS OJAH" who hails from the city of Titabor from Jorhat district, Assam. Here is a small effort from us showcasing HORUPAI DAS OJAH and his talent of "DHULBADON" along with some knowledgeable discussions.
The youth of Assam and the Government has the responsibility to preserve and revive this fading form of art, which constitutes a part of our identity.
