20 October - 13 November
Despard Gallery is pleased to present a sneak peek at the upcoming inaugural solo exhibition by emerging Tasmanian artist, Maggie Jeffries.
Maggie Jeffries draws inspiration from the gardens and bushland in which she spent time as a child, using paint to explore the emotive language of plants. Compositions originate from multiple images depicting locations of personal significance, collaged together to evoke the complexity of memory. Each work is then carefully rendered through paint, blending the intricacy of realism together with the freedom of a more intuitive approach.
Jeffries graduated from the University of Tasmania in 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts and Fine Arts, majoring in psychology and painting. Since graduating, Jeffries has immersed herself in working alongside and in collaboration with artists with disabilities. This included receiving an artist fellowship in 2020 to work for Creative Growth in California, USA, as well as collaborating with the City of Hobart 2021 Ability to Create annual exhibition in 2021. Jeffries was awarded the ‘People Choice’ at the 2019 Henry Jones Art Prize and more recently, undertook a six week arts residency on King Island.
