Great video! Test your luck became one of my instant favorites after watching Darwin Ortiz’s memorized deck download. It is wicked clever. Ramon Rioboo’s touch and telepathy is absolutely astounding. For invisible deck, I really like Patrick Redford’s Ultra Mental Memorized deck. His handling fixes 2 problems with Michael Close’s routine. Worth looking into.

Happy New Year to you David ! It begins with this huge and long avaited video that certainly took you very long to make, I really appreciate the effort and recommandations ! So well thought out ! As a little gift let me give you another recommandation (but certainly only in french DVD) on the spec cut & divine plot : AIRPORT from Philippe de Perthuis in 'L'Ecole du Mentalisme' DVD set (vol3). It's great because 4 spectators involved, cards go from one paquet to another and you only see ONE spectator's cards! If you can find this you will love it. Thanks for all your work again !

Wow David! You did put a lot of time into putting this together and I thank you for that! I'm looking forward to having some fun trying each of the items you covered. One other version you might enjoy is George McBride's "Stebbins Prediction" in Scotland up Close by Peter Duffie. Spectator (S) inserts a business card (BC) into a deck spread face down and the BC along with the card on either side are removed from the deck (cards not shown). The balance of the deck is gathered up and shuffled by the magician (M). The (S) is invited to cut off a packet of cards and count them. The (M) faro shuffles the balance as the (S) counts his packet silently (let's say 16). The (M) shows cards to the (S) counting on at a time asking the (S) to remember the card at their number. The (M) table the portion of the deck he has. Now for the reveals: 1) The (M) turns over the cards next to the BC which reveal the suit and value of the thought of card (e.g. QC) 2) The BC is turned over and it has a message "Your card is at the 30th position"... counting there you discover the QC

John - That sounds like a lot of procedure for a CAAN effect using a stack - If you are interested, send me an email and I will show you a much better version of that same type of effect where - A spectator names any card... you take out a business card and mention that you will write something on the back that will be important in a moment, they then insert the business card anywhere into the pack, you can then show them that the prediction that you wrote on the back of the card says "Your card is 7 cards away". Of course, they can count down from where they put the business card to find their randomly named playing card. This uses a memorized deck and no sleight of hand. Pure simplicity but very powerful to laypeople. Too many good effects that I could have included in this review.

Once again, another superlative review David! What a start to the new year! Another routine that meets your criteria (no marks, uses one deck, no gaffs or gimmicks, etc) is Sherlock by Pit Hartling in his book "In Order To Amaze". This effect involves the spectator removing a card, remembering it, returning it to the deck, riffle shuffling the deck multiple times, cutting the deck before returning it to the performer. You can be in another room while this happens. After all of this the performer is able to determine the selected card and, as a bonus, the deck ends up back in stack!

David: Do you ever have the Spectator shuffle a deck of cards to their heart's content and then do a deck switch so that at the end of the memorized deck effect it seems even more impossible because they so thoroughly mixed the cards themselves beforehand?

I'm not a huge fan of mem deck work, but learned the Tamariz stack during the 2020 quarantine as a challenge to myself. My favorite routine is The Core by Pit Hartling. I adapted the presentation to my style and use the alternate handling he describes in his book In Order to Amaze, which I find is much easier to do on the fly than the original handling he describes on the Vanishing Inc download. I also get great reactions from All of a Kind from Mnemonica.

Great overall review! In my personal top5, I would have added some Aronson (like the one you quote, or Everybody's lazy), or even Asi wind (AACAAN) routines but that may be a matter of taste. Regarding the invisible deck, check out this handling of Tj Shoesmith (first routine). It avoids a pass, and make the procedure extremely deceptive and clean: kzitem.info/news/bejne/mamFnKmMjYOcio4
@UnbiasedMagicReviews
Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the TJ Shoesmith link - That looks like a natural handling especially for a large group of people. It's not a bad option but it does look like "card handling". I can see how the simple hand turnover move will fly by people. Regarding the Michael Close version - one on one I have never had anyone call me out on the h******* because it is done in the action of moving the deck to spread it on the table. It is NOT a move in the eyes of the spectator. You don't even have to move quickly. The natural action of moving your hands to the left to spread the deck on the table completely hides it. On camera you can't hide anything but in real life, no one ever suspects anything has happened which makes it so magical to the spectator. I couldn't even scratch the surface of all the memorized deck magic that exists out there in this review. I have stopped recommending Asi Wind's AACAAN as the calculations are not easy to do under fire. I used the routine for a long time before I came up with my own version Unbiased which looks the same but is MUCH quicker and doesn't even use a memorized deck. Part of the reason why my version is SOOOO much faster is because there is no double-digit math involved, which of course will also lead to less errors.
@ffish2001
Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your answser. Here I don't fully agree with you 😀concerning "card handling" (although TJ Shoesmith handling at Magic Cattle is not the most confident and relaxed one, you can feel the tension I agree): in general a pass (or half pass here) is really a card handling since nothing should appear, you handle the deck only. Here as you said, there is in addition the action of spreading the deck on the table. In the case of "TJ Shoesmith" he has the motivation to show the faces and the backs of the deck. The fact that he does not realize it optimally is another point. I have been using both handling in different situations but I like the paddle move very much, in particular if you cannot spread the deck precisely. Regarding ACAAN, I understand the version you exposed is easier and more practical but I find Asi's one stronger (speaking about Top 5 effects). But I agree the maths involved needs regular trainig and practice. Thank you again for your answer and generally for your excellent reviews.
@UnbiasedMagicReviews

@@ffish2001 Regarding Asi Wind's ACAAN. This is coming from someone who used Asi's routine for over 3 years. I even showed a demo of Asi Wind's effect in real time with a random card/number generator when I reviewed his book here on my channel. I say this because people need to understand that Asi Wind's effect is now obsolete. The issue is not practicing the math. You can never be completely prepared as you never know what card/number the person will select at random. (You will always have to do the math in your head and sometimes 2x) There is at times going to be a delay which is not normal, and you will have to be clever how you cover it as you subtract large numbers in your mind. This delay in action is what ruins the effect. You can't compare that to the effect I created as I know instantly exactly where to go the moment I hear the number and card the person has named. No delay, no gaps, no stuttering, no strange pauses while you are doing difficult mental calculations. I have YET to find a magician who has picked up my effect and said, I prefer Asi Wind's AACAAN.
