For this video, we’re in Swindon, and we’re visiting their most famous landmark - the Magic Roundabout.
For those of you who are not familiar with the Magic Roundabout, in short, it’s a junction that has a series of 5 small roundabouts, or 6 if you include the inner roundabout, and it’s designed to keep large amounts of traffic flowing.
But it both scares and amazes drivers.
Traffic flows in the usual clockwise manner around the five mini-roundabouts, but the interesting thing is that the traffic flows around the inner circle anticlockwise.
Sounds simple enough, doesn’t it?
The Magic Roundabout has been listed by the BBC as one of the top 10 scariest junctions in the UK, but honestly, it’s a stroke of engineering genius that works really well.
We drove around it for about 10 minutes taking just about every route possible, and it was a lot of fun if I’m honest.
I can see how it would be intimidating if you’re a nervous driver, or you didn’t expect to end up in this madness with so many decisions to make.
But if you point your vehicle in the direction you want to go, are mindful of the lanes, and follow the flow of traffic, you’re probably going to end up exiting where you want to get off.
And if you don’t, you can just get back on and have another go.
Here’s what it looks like from above, which will give you a much better viewpoint and understanding of how the Magic Roundabout works:
As you can see, you can enter at several points, then you just need to swing around the roundabout in the direction you want to go and keep left or right depending on where you want to get off.
Looking up news reports and stats, the most up-to-date information I could find says there have been 17 major accidents and one fatality recorded since the Magic Roundabout opened in 1972.
There are more reports from the local residents complaining about living near it, but let’s be real, it’s your own fault if you decided to live near it and can’t stand the sounds of car horns and skidding tyers during the night.
It has some pretty good stuff, nearby.
There is a chippy, Burger King, petrol station, the fire station, and of course, the County Ground, which is Swindon F.C.’s stadium.
So, if you’re passing through Swindon I recommend taking a small detour and experiencing the Magic Roundabout, it’s a lot of fun.
Anyway, thanks for watching, and please don’t forget to hit that like and subscribe button, we got some more cool videos coming up and you’ll be notified when we release them!
