Good job, you're the first one I've seen that kept the carbs bolted together. That's the first thing they taught us in M.C. school saves lots of problems especially with old bikes(I have a 1984 V65 1100C) makes synchronizing much easier.

This is a chore every spring here in Colorado. The ethanol in the gas here gums up the carbs terrible in just a few weeks of sitting. I have since retired this bike but before I did I ran an experiment on it. I built a manifold and converted it to Fuel injection. Ran well but it cost way too much. I have some better-cheaper ideas that I am going to try on my Kawasaki zg1000.

This was incredibly helpful, I just got and 87 700 as well. I know have it running on 2 cylinders 😂 I have found some ideas for the carb boots that worked for me. I boiled them once and It helped a lot. Then someone told me to boil it in a mix of water and winter green oil and that made a huge difference. Also when I install them I push them into the back cylinders first and tilt the front boots forward and push the carbs down which pulls the carb back, centering the carbs. I had originally made the mistake of taking the plenum off before the carbs! I did have one question, what size of a gap did you give the throttle blades? Thanks and good luck on the fuel injection conversion!

The newer boot are a blessing. They are tapered like a funnel and the carbs slide down the taper and drop right into place.

I removed the healt shield from the front of the airbox and then loosened the airbox from the carburetors. Both those steps were not necessary. The carbs will come out with the airbox attached. and beside the airbox provides the mount that holds all for carbs together as one unit. It is necessary to attach the carbs to the airbox to properly set the butterflies and sync the carbs. It was a learning experience as I could not find any videos on how to remove the carbs on an 86 magna.

Great video, thanks for sharing. What spray did you use? I need something strong enough to melt your rubber gloves for my carbs. I took them off and ran wires and needles through the jets, but the passages must still be clogged. It still has big issues. It will barely start and then runs badly.

I used berrymans b-12 cleaner. If you can find an "E" guitar string. it will just fit through the jets. I learned that this bike must operate with the airbox and filter installed. Without it there is not enough vacuum for the jets to properly mix the fuel. It will start but run badly without the airbox. As a proof of concept this bike has been converted from carbs to fuel injection . kzitem.info/door/PL9ZAieLe6zonSleaj5i7FP0fbTPn_Uqb9

with rust dust like that u need to clean out and coat the fuel tank or replace it or cleaned carbs will get clogged again. u must clean the small filters above the float seats. boiling jets and other brass parts in water with some lemon juice for 10 minutes will bring back the brass color. also, its a HUGE MISTAKE to use ANY silicone sealer on float bowls.

How did you synch the carbs and did you have to adjust the float height?
@gerrypineau
6 жыл бұрын
I use a steel needle to sync the carbs on the bench. It is more accurate that a shim or piece of paper. On this bike I never got around to syncing in the bike since I am converting it over to fuel injection. On my other bikes I have used the vacuum ports on each carb and a homemade balance tool. Bench sync here. . kzitem.info/news/bejne/saB7uHhjhKFneYI in bike sync here. kzitem.info/news/bejne/1Jyaq5mekHali3o if you are concerned about the float level look here kzitem.info/news/bejne/15Wa1qiIr6Gai44

Dont take them out. They do not come out. Just use a fine wire to go through them. That is enough. That is where the slider needle goes from the top side. A fairly large jet and needle. you can see it at frame 20:52 in the video.

The big spring is likely a thrust spring between the carb throttle shafts. It'll fall out when you separate the carbs. The first time I separated them, I had no idea what they were. I put them in a bag called "mystery springs" for about a year wondering if they were even from the bike or if I'd dropped them there from another project. The small spring is probably the synch screw spring--those also have a tendency to disappear.

@@chrispowell333 I'm actually working on a video now of a vf500f that addresses these since nobody mentions them. That being said... This is an 87 magna. When I bought it, it had been in storage for ten years. I use this bike for experimenting with wild ideas. I have cut the front end off and make it so It is an adjustable rake. kzitem.info/news/bejne/mIqvr3pjkV92i3Y Next thing for this bike is to fit it with a single 2 barrel carburetor . The black and red on is a 97 Magna. Much easier to work on. carbs come off and on so much easier. Magnas are great for around town riding. Easy to handle and plenty of power for tooling around town. For the highway I prefer the ride of my 87 Honda shadow. It has a larger rake angle and the ride is smoother but its harder to steer at low speeds. So I ride one of the magnas to the supermarket but if I am going for a long ride I take the shadow.
