John didn't sign the original document. He attached his royal seal to the document. There is debate about whether or not John could even write. I was also confused as to why Richard the Lionhearted was not mentioned. But other than that, great video! We need more channels like this on youtube!

I'm starting to think that the respect of peoples rights was what truly enabled England to expand to all corners of the world. An oppressive militant expansion would have been resisted, but other cultures found the English worth trading with.

Sir, I cannot thank you enough for your clarity and preciseness in your histories. You are one of the easiest to comprehend amoung various media. Sir, there is a map you use about the Magna Carta I've found a very interesting feature upon. I ask you to look at the Magna Carta map you have used at the very start of your KZitem. Look at Iceland while viewing the 2 Harolds and William on a large EU map. Sir, modern Iceland has no land south of it, but your map does- what is this? surtsey?

in 1215... that eras "thomas Jefferson" made thier own Deceleration of independence called the magna carta.. or the Mighty Charter. if you look at the history of america you see that the Constitution is based off the magna carta and is a form of a Charter itself. in the middle of all this Magna Carta stuff.. you had robin hood doing his stuff. this era of time is actually very very interesting for a free nobleman.

@julZgermany1990 From what I've gathered the Magna Carta was one of the first instances where the the line between the ruler and ruled was written down to be honoured. This would naturally be an important stepping stone to any Democracy, wherein there is a point made about just how far the power of the 'ruler' (or government) is allowed to encroach on the rights of the ruled.

the US law is bassed on British law. You have 12 people who decide if a person is guilty or not guilty.washington was British and he up held the magna carta. that is why the now US, faught the war against the british Government. This history is US history.

I love teachers who actually make the content they're teaching interesting! Though I already got a basic interest in history for some reason so it wasn't too difficult to find interest, not to mention the Magna Carta and American Constitution are being shat on these days so it's good to know basic rights. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it, and we are repeating history as our rights are stripped and corruption is taking hold. History in the making, check 'TheAlexJonesChannel'.

Here in America, BASED on results today (2011) we're BACK to 'COUNTS' and 'The People' once again don't have 'Magna Carta' or 'Constitution' type rights (thanks to The BIRTH CERTIFICATE 'contract' scheme 'put in place' in 1933 by Congress)

So the Angles, Saxons and Jutes (Germanics) came to England and then were conquered by Vikings, won England back through King Alfred, lost it again and were ruled by Cnut, and then won it back through Cnut's stepson? And unlike the Vikings, the Normans managed to stay in England?

@kuriokazuki "free-men" did not include the serfs, or tenant farmers...it was a name only applied to landed men...and I MEAN "men"! So this document did NOT grant rights and freedoms to all in 1215. It does, interestingly have the first reference of which I am aware, of a right for women, specifically indicating that widows may remain single if they choose, but MUST seek the approval of their liege should they choose to remarry.

that John was not fit to wear chainmail ! nor was he much of a diplomat! because of his actions, he blew it at the Irish peace conferance. all the chieftains were ready to swear fealty to London!! then Johnny pulls up in his boat. they look at him, he looks at them, sees the wild Irish hair and beards and starts laughing!!! result, a war. a long dirty ugly war of axes in the night. no road was safe.

@DeductiveReason The "electoral college" only elects the President. Senators and Congressmen are elected directly. So are mayors, city councilmen, governors, state representatives...I think you are making the same myopic mistake that most people do when they assume that the president is the only office with authority and power to rule under the Constitution...not true. The electoral college is a statistical manipulator at best, but mostly has agreed with popular votes.
